Why aren't you guys referring to yourselves as Marines instead of "former" Marines? What is the point of that?

Quite simple....
On active duty - Marine
Not on active duty, so "former" Marine
Not dead, so not "Ex-Marine"

Then I'd guess that you aren't a US Marine... to do so would dishonor yourself and your Corps.

the reason I didn't sign up into a volunteer army......because war sucks and humans have fragile psyche.....especially when in crazy situations like war.....hence the homeless vets and vets with
PTSD, etc......

So because I volunteered are you insinuating I don't believe war sucks and my psyche is not fragile? People join the Military for many reasons, as others choose not to for may reasons. I can understand not joining becuase of the feelings about war, etc. But I doubt too many people join becuase they are anxious to go to war. I'm sure their motivation is different, as was mine. I didn't join becuase I wanted to go to Nam and fight a war I didn't understand.

Graham.
You can be a "former" sailor, soldier, coast guard or airman, but it doesn't work that way in the Marines.

Once a Marine, always a Marine. It's forever.

"A Marine is a Marine.  I set that policy two weeks ago - there's no such thing as a former Marine.   You're a Marine,
just in a different uniform and you're in a different phase of your life.  But you'll always be a Marine because
you went to Parris Island, San Diego or the hills of Quantico.  There's no such thing as a former Marine."

The Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James F. Amos

Watch the video, maybe that will help explain it... or maybe not.

not at all.....I am saying that YOU DO believe it also.....I'm saying I couldn't join because I would be pissing on 'the enemy'.......and doing an act like that may or may NOT be respectful....

the possible consequences.....

I disagree with the Commandant...I feel it disrepectful to ACTIVE and RESERVE MARINES who are currently serving to cal lmyself a MARINE when I do not wear the uniform nor participate in official Marine Corps actions....I served my time so regardless of what he wants to say, I AM A FORMER MARINE....always a Marine at heart...and some day an EX-MARINE.

I agree!! It is called WAR!! And they are called THE ENEMY!! And it is KILL OR BE KILLED!! This was NOT an act of torture!!! OMG!! Get over it!!

If we are there to 'help' rebuild and try to create 'good relations' with these muslims.....then get these folks out of uniform, put them in jeans and tee shirts and take their guns and hand granades away!!! Give them Jeep Cherokees to drive and put them up in hotels....k?

Wars are fought on many fronts... some more obvious than others, but all are important in the overall war effort.

One route to win a war is to deprive the enemy of new recruits... This Video is a major recruiting tool for the enemy
who is always trying to recruit new men to their cause.
The USA spends millions of dollars on civilian outreach and medical patrols to win the enemy to our side.
This video will likely erase that entire effort.

Hence, my point. WHY did you say "I WAS a Marine" ??? Once a Marine, always a Marine. Not a soldier, either.

I misunderstood the post.

I posted 'WAS', because I'm not serving active duty and didn't want to give that impression.
Sorry for the mix up.

OK. JoeBoxer is in disagreement. I know a lot of Marines and some of them are 85, and some of them have been out of uniform since the 40s or 50s. I even know a few of the Frozen Chosin. But if I see one I say "Hello Marine!" and they immediately respond, having never stopped being Marines.

Don't mix-up words and intentions...people call me a Marine and I respond, PROUDLY...but I do not state I am a Marine, I state I am a former Marine or that I was IN the Marine Corps....different then responding to being called a Marine.

If I meet another on the street I will also say HEY MARINE...that's they way it is!

Quoted Text
ONCE A MARINE, ALWAYS A MARINE:
Once a Marine, Always a Marine: This truism was adopted as the official motto of the Marine Corps League. The origin of the statement is credited to a gung-ho Marine Corps Master Sergeant, Paul Woyshner. During a barroom argument he shouted, "Once a Marine, always a Marine!" MSgt. Woyshner was right. Once the title "U.S. Marine" has been earned, it is retained. There are no ex-Marines or former-Marines. There are (1) active duty Marines, (2) retired Marines, (3) reserve Marines, and (4) Marine veterans. Nonetheless, once one has earned the title, he remains a Marine for life.

Well you see, that is what we MARINES, former, current or whatever, fought for...the right to freedom....so everyone has the right to there own opinion.  As I stated, I am a "former" Marine, because I do not serve actively and personally do not want to disrespect those that are active.  Am I a MARINE, sure, I earned it.....but former...that is how I view it!
