Trader Joe's, which has 360 stores nationally, started in California and is still headquartered there. But the company is controlled by the Albrecht family in Germany, which operates Aldi Nord supermarkets. (Another branch of the family operates Aldi grocery stores, which has Capital Region locations.)
A Trader Joe's in Colonie adds another player to the regional supermarket competition, which has intensified with the opening of The Fresh Market in Latham and the arrival of ShopRite, a New Jersey chain that has a store in Niskayuna. It has a site under construction in Albany, and is planning markets region-wide.
Price Chopper, the region's hometown chain, has said it's ready to meet the new competition.
On Thursday, Schenectady-based Golub Corp. received variance approval from the Colonie Board of Zoning Appeals for a major overhaul of its Price Chopper store along Route 9 in Latham.
A Price Chopper official told the board the store will become a company flagship and "the store of the decade" — complete with more prepared foods, an outdoor dining courtyard and a drive-through pharmacy.
JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!
You'd think if Rhonda was pushing for a business to come to Rotterdam, he'd tell everyone (us) the name so we could get behind the petition / word of mouth campaign too
I t makes sense Trader Joe's would go to Wolf Road. Why not? They are next door to The Christmas Tree Shop in Hyannis and next to a Bed Bath and Beyond as well as the Cape Cod Mall. They would definitely choose a place that gets an overflow of traffic. Especially SLOW traffic that would pull in to the lot. It is positioned well. That spot has always been a profitable one for all of the businesses that have been there---Star Market, Mt. Pleasant Bakery, Office Max. It has been fine. Office Max probably did less tbusiness than the others because of their national position and expectations. It was good for small family owned places.
that's because most of the residents DON'T KNOW HOW TO READ OR WRITE!!! Just ask the folks who work there how well their forms are filled out!!! NOT!!!

Simple work for Trader Joe's By Alyssa Jung
Capital District — Trader Joe's representatives won't say how long the grocery chain with a cult-like following has been eyeing a Capital District location, but now that it's been officially announced that 79 Wolf Road will be the store's local home, it should be a fairly fluid process to open by mid-2012.
“It's a simple process. It won't even be before the Planning Board because it's handled administratively,” said Joe LaCivita, director of economic development and planning for the Town of Colonie. “It's a pretty straightforward application process for them.”
The store will have to apply to the town's building department for a change in tenancy, which LaCivita said the property owners have already done for an interior outfit of the building. From there, it's administrative actions.
Trader Joe's touts itself as a “truly unique grocery store unlike any other” and a “store of stories” because of the more than 2,000 domestic, imported and specialty food items available, many under the Trader Joe's name. Just how do you support someone's self-promoting imagination and vaporware?
Surprised they are not opening in Downtown Schenectady. We have heard how Metrograft is looking for national retailers and that people need a market down there. Instead they are opening in Colonie where taxes are a third of Schenectady County. Somebody should have shown them the beautiful new curbs, $10,000 street lights and pillars at Vale and Little Italy- lol.
Trader Joe’s: Closing the deal that brought them to Albany Premium content from The Business Review by Michael DeMasi, Reporter Date: Friday, January 13, 2012, 6:00am EST
Baked hams almost stood in the way of Trader Joe’s—one of the most sought-after grocery chains in the nation—from opening a store on Wolf Road. After scouting locations, a Trader Joe’s real estate broker zeroed in on 79 Wolf Road in Colonie where OfficeMax had closed its doors last March. The site had good visibility and was the right size to become the first Trader Joe’s in the region. The only problem, it turned out, was the HoneyBaked Ham Co. store next door that shares the same landlord and parking lot. “HoneyBaked Ham has a lease exclusion with any other food retailer,” said Marc Goldstein, principal broker/owner of Columbia Realty New York LLC, who represented the landlord in the negotiations with Trader Joe’s and HoneyBaked Ham. The owner of HoneyBaked Ham, a chain based in Boston, agreed to allow Trader Joe’s to open next door as part of a lease renewal. There are no restrictions on the merchandise that Trader Joe’s can sell. “The timing was right,” Goldstein said. “We reworked his lease, and made sure everybody was happy.” The owner of HoneyBaked Ham was not available for comment. Goldstein, who has been in the commercial real estate business for 27 years, said the lease exclusion was a “speed bump” in the negotiations, and that otherwise the deal proceeded smoothly. Landing Trader Joe’s is a coup for the area. The California-based company has more than 360 stores in 31 states and devoted shoppers who rave about the quirky, laid-back atmosphere, low prices and unique products, such as dairy-free chocolate chip cookies. Trader Joe’s sales totaled $6.81 billion in 2010, according to STORES magazine, ranking it the 55th-largest retailer in America........................>>>>....................>>>>..................http://www.bizjournals.com/albany/print-edition/2012/01/13/trader-joes-closing-the-deal-that.html

The reason there's no union is that Golub pays a fair wage plus good benefits so why exactly do they need a union, I know so the union can take dues and give them to the Dem Party.
