Maybe the calendar maker keeled over and they figured they could take their time finding a new one. Then their political civilization came to a screeching halt. In a matter of no time at all they had disappeared as a nation but they remained as peoples in that region. I can only imagine it being like the USA breaking into 50 different countries during a time of turmoil and natural disaster (drought that if my memory serves me correctly last several centuries.) Anyway, I think the whole thing is overblown. If we paid attention to every prophecy or prediction of the world ending, people wouldn't be paying their mortgages. Oh, that's right- they aren't already!
