Plea in phony paycheck scheme

    Federal authorities are investigating a fake check scheme that has taken as much as $120,000 from local businesses, largely from Schenectady-area Price Chopper supermarkets, authorities said Wednesday.
    One man has been charged federally so far — Rhakim Rashon Atkins. Others face charges in state court, a prosecutor said. The investigation itself is ongoing.
    Atkins, whose age and address were unavailable, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court last week to conspiracy to make, utter and possess counterfeited securities.
    Atkins was accused of participating in the scheme from December 2010 to about July 2011, distributing high-quality forged payroll checks to individuals. Those individuals would then cash them at Price Chopper’s stores on Altamont Avenue in Rotterdam or Eastern Parkway in Schenectady, according to federal paperwork. A “local corner store” was also targeted. The individuals, or “runners,” would then get a portion of the check as their fee, sometimes $200 per fake check. Atkins and others in the scheme would get the rest.
    The runners, though, would also use their own Price Chopper AdvantEdge Card.
    By late August, investigators, using the AdvantEdge Card records, had identified at least 70 individuals who had cashed at least one counterfeit payroll check, according to federal court paperwork.
    Those 70 individuals together helped take an estimated $70,000.
    Secret Service investigators have been working with local police to identify all the counterfeit checks, and the individuals who helped cash them, Assistant U.S. Attorney Edward Grogan said.
    Several of the runners have also been arrested on state charges, Grogan said. The identities of those arrested were not available Wednesday.
    The effort to identify the runners has since uncovered more bad checks, Grogan said Wednesday. These schemes have been ongoing for a long time.....Price Chopper has had many fraudulant events...one, is the

so called check from a car dealer...looks like a check for $$$ towards a new vehicle...and it was cashed....

At $40 per thousand for City Muni and School Taxes, the exemption is only $960,000 a year or a little less than $5,000,000 for the 5 years.   These workers dont go downtown to eat at lunch.  There is a cafeteria in the building and everyone is brown bagging it.  Save the excuses for this.  Relief comes in 2014.  At that time expect them to fight the assessment.

do you know what the address was in Rotterdam?  Bet they got a deal on that side as well.  

Duanesburg Rd....across from Bellevue Bldrs......was there for many years....then wham ...zam.....done.

and the employees did put money into the Town ecomony ......many went out for lunch....shopping lunch/after work hours.

It was a great place for Rotterdam
