Sears to close more stores as holiday sales slump
Tue Dec 27, 2011 8:05am EST

(Reuters) - Sears Holdings Corp will close up to 120 stores in its Kmart and namesake chains, blaming poor sales of consumer electronics so far this holiday season and saying it would focus its energy on its better performing stores.

Sales at Sears Holdings, whose chairman and top shareholder is hedge fund manager Edward Lampert, have fallen every year since it was formed through the merger of Sears and Kmart in 2005.

And so far this holiday season, the drop has continued. Same-store sales at Kmart were down 4.4 percent in the current quarter through Christmas Day, and down 6 percent at Sears' U.S. stores. Companywide, they were down 5.2 percent, the company said on Tuesday........................>>>>................>>>>..................http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/12/27/us-sears-sales-idUSTRE7BQ0AV20111227

Maybe they should take a percentage of the profits and build more of the same stores, and charge an entry fee.  If that doesnt work then they should put a Proctors in everyone......guaranteed to generate business.    Silly rabbits.

Good thing they already closed the Downtown Sears and Glenville Kmart. Schenectady County always the first place to cut unprofitable national businesses. This was actual positive development for Downtown. City morons needed more parking spaces for the new County Building at the old Trustco HQ- lol.

When a mall loses an anchor store in today's economy it is the death of the Mall unless of course Walmart comes in.  I heard they want to leave Altamont Ave.

Rotterdam Square Mall survived when it lost one anchor almost 20 years ago -- Hess' Department Store .. eventually Filene's moved in.

I have been in Rotterdam Square Mall a lot during November and December -- the crowds have been pretty good -- certainly NOT what they were 10 to 15 years ago ... but not horrible.

It is very clear that the mall needs a major spruce up or restructuring -- I believe it needs to become more like Mohawk Commons and Clifton Commons and that it also needs to bring in a new anchor(s).

Sears Holdings released an ugly Christmas surprise this week, as it disclosed a dropoff in holiday sales and announced plans to shutter 100 to 120 stores. The company did not say which stores were closing, until now.

Here is the list from the company releasing locations for 79 of the planned store closures, which are a mix of Sears outlets and Kmarts. Sears said it will post updates as they become available. The company’s document doesn’t say when the stores will close for good.

Looks like ALL NY stores are safe, for now, according to this list

the operative words are "so far"

I really can't believe they'd leave both stores open in the same mall, doesn't make sense.
