Residents to track sewage plant smell
Contractor did better job than city, neighbors say
BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

    Mayor-elect Gary McCarthy intends to keep a close eye — and nose — on the city’s odor problem at the sewage treatment plant.
    Some neighbors near the plant on Anthony Street in the Northside neighborhood say they were hit by regular odors from the plant when the city ran it decades ago. Under a contractor, Veolia, odors persisted but were not as frequent, residents said.
    They fear the smell might get worse again as the city takes control of the plant on Jan. 1.
    To deal with the issue, McCarthy hopes to track the odors and eliminate problems through the noses of those who live and work nearby.
    He is starting a new odor committee, replacing the informal group run by Veolia.
    The new committee will meet regularly, once a month or once a quarter, and produce reports tracking the odor.
    He has started recruiting business owners and hopes to set up the committee soon.
    “To have tracking — since I’ve been on the council, I’ve never seen a report,” he said.
    He also intends to eliminate composting at the plant, which he said is likely the cause of the odor that wafts across the neighborhood intermittently.
    “As we move away from the composting to other technologies, it’s going to be a much more enclosed environment,” McCarthy said.
    But that won’t happen for two to three years, he added. It’s too expensive for the city to do it alone.
