New sign to direct Jay Street walkway visitors
Officials hope people will explore area’s businesses

SCHENECTADY COUNTY — For those more accustomed to mall directories than street signs, help is coming to downtown Schenectady.
If the City Council approves the plan, lit directories will be posted on both sides of the Jay Street pedestrian walkway.
Yes, the walkway is just one block long. But planners have found that many visitors don’t realize how close they are to well-known locales when they park on the City Hall side of downtown.
Soon, they will be greeted by a 10-foot-tall purple sign, lit by LEDs and built by the Metroplex Development Authority.
Inside will be a paper directory and map, similar to those found in malls. There will even be a “you are here” mark.
“We’re catching up to what suburban retail areas have done for years,” said Metroplex Chairman Ray Gillen. “We need to do a better job with way-finding. We have more new people coming to Schenectady.”
And many of them are heading to the new YMCA and SCCC’s new classrooms in Center City. Reports there indicate that visitors want to go to Bomber’s or Ambition’s after a workout or a class, but have no idea that both eateries are literally just around the corner.
“They’ve heard of a place,” Gillen said. “They don’t know where it is. It helps people understand what’s here.
The signs were designed with the knowledge that some of the mom-and-pop stores on Jay Street go out of business quickly. The store names will be printed on tabs that can be easily removed and replaced, Metroplex Executive Director Jayme Lahut said.
He’s hoping it encourages visitors to explore the downtown, rather than going to one location and then leaving.
“You want people to walk around, and go from one attraction to the next,” he said...................>>>>................................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/dec/12/1212jay-street-walkway/

"Mom-and-pop stores go out of business quickly on Jay Street" said Gillen

Maybe because you don't give tax breaks and millions in dollars of grant money to honest hard-working people.

No sign will fix that.

Genius people we have running Metroplex.  Let's make a directory for the people to get to the "well known" businesses who alreay have gigantic neon signs paid for by the citizens.  Lets further help the big get bigger.....no help to the unknown smaller businesses who are struggling to survive.

This is the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. All of us at work got a good laugh out of this one!!!!

Is it that today's folks are illiterate and/or stupid? Downtown had stores 'everywhere' years ago and yet no one needed a 'directory'!!! Must be folks were more educated back then, eh?

IT'S A MIRACLE!!!!! Just ask Susan Savage!!

In typical Gazetto reporting no price tag is given. Another Death Ray idea-hide your wallet. A ten foot tall purple LED sign for a one block pedestrian mall. That should turn it around- lol. Of course no small business can stay open with few customers and the oppressive DEM City taxes and fees.

We saw it here at work and there was no 'price tag' associated with it. Not mentioned!
