Metroplex plan would eliminate one-way streets
Idea targets more navigable downtown

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Kathleen Moore at 395-3120 or moore@dailygazette.com.

Once you get to the City Hall section of downtown, it can seem as though the one-way streets are conspiring against you.
Of the four streets surrounding City Hall, three are one-way, and none of them are going toward the downtown.
That means that, although Proctors is just a block away, it is far easier to park and walk than to get there by car. For visitors who do not have a clear idea of how close Proctors is, that’s not an appealing prospect.
“I have actually seen people pull over, absolutely exasperated,” said Metroplex Chairman Ray Gillen. “You really have to be a local to traverse these roads.”
At last, planners have a solution. But it might cost the city $200,000.
The City Council is considering a Metroplex proposal to get rid of the one-way-only signs on Franklin Street, Jay Street and Clinton Street.
    Council members welcomed the plan.
“It’s going to make navigating downtown a lot easier, especially for people who don’t live here,” said Councilman Thomas Della Sala.
The biggest problems are on Jay and Clinton, side streets that stop drivers hoping to get to Proctors. Drivers end up going several blocks out of their way — if they can figure out which way to go, without any signs advertising parking or attractions. ........................>>>>...........................>>>>...................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01102&AppName=1

Yesterday in the Gazetto, Metroplex wanted people to park near City Hall and now this plan would eliminate 1/2 the current parking spaces??? Guess stupid is as stupid does.

The $300K- $400K cost Metroplex 'will split' with the City?? Where the hell is the City getting the money from?

This is such a poor attempt it's sad. Fact is, it doesn't matter if you had all of Erie bypass Proctors....it loses millions EVERY YEAR! Proctors is not making enough, no roads will fix that....a new GM though could do the trick!

$200,000 to remove one way signs. Only Schenectady has 2 streets running one way in the same direction a block apart. They can have every street leading to Proctor's front door they still won't pay ANY PILOT. With Vince Riggi now it can pass 6-1. With all the hype many empty store fronts on Jay and State. Olenders, Armory for sale with no takers. SCCC and Y have to fill up Gillen's Folly. Keep the implosion going.

Great idea -- now all they need to do is reopen Jay Street to vehicular traffic again and undo Jurzynski's ridiculous narrowing of State Street to 1 lane in either direction.

Mr. Gillen and Metroplex -- keep the great ideas coming.

Or have an original idea? Forget great. Same idiotic plans over and over. More unmanned cameras, more paid parking/higher meters, no free Green Market parking at Proctor's. Could not agree more about State and that's exactly what DEMS want to do on Erie Blvd! Just what Erie Boulevard needs? Choked traffic, narrow lanes, longer commute to GE from outside the County and chase away all small businesses! Keep the implosion going.

Mr. Gillen should be made a Patroon and have a whole day dedicated to honoring him and Metroplex -- schools closed -- parades in the street -- a ticker taper parade --- the whole shebang.

I would go one step further -- I would rename State Street - Gillen Street in honor of the contributions of this gentleman.. I would also rename Erie Boulevard in honor of Mr. Phillip Morris --- MORRIS BOULEVARD has a wonderful ring to it!   Thank GOD we have strong and intelligent leaders who want to build the City UP -- Instead of wanting to tear the City DOWN like the Negative Nayboobs of Negativity do!

Downtown streets have been reconfigured several times. It doesn't make a difference, really. Be nice if somebody would ever learn a lesson and quit doing the same things over and over.

huh?

So, you think a person who rewards a pair of tax delinquent scumy slumlords wth a quarter of a million dollars in taxpayer money is worthy of being made a patroon?

How is it that you think a guy -- Gilklen -- who has caused the property values in the city to plummet should be made a patroon?
On what basis should a guy -- Gillen -- be made a patroon when he has caused a dramatic increae  in property taxes --- causing the taxes to be about the highest in the whole country?

How about the homeonwers, the overtaxed taxpayers who are suffering and losing their homes be given such an honor?

Delusional. Gillen already has Gillen's Gulch named after him. Where Robinson's was, where he was bringing in a national retailer -lol. He should have a bag of fertilizer named in his honor. As far as Fat Morris, rename Robb Alley in his honor after he contributes $10 million back to the oppressed County taxpayers. Both Metrograft and Proctor's should be audited by the State Comptroller.

Gosh, Proctors must be doing really bad if they have to turn to such a desparate move to make all streets go to Proctors.   I guess they don't know that you can get to State Street via Broadway, from both sides of State St.

Yeah, traffic patterns were changed a few times.   I think it's currently about back to what it was originally.  Remember when they made it so using Clinton St and Broadway were one-way only so it was supposed to be easier by making right turns only kind of.   Then it was changed back I think.

So now they want to change it again?   Such an UTTER WASTE of taxpayers money---money which should be spent in the neighborhoods----where people live.

DV, what is the quality of life for the people in the neighborhoods?   Huh?

Want to see the drooling idiot that got lost Downtown and had to pull over. There are signs all over Downtown pointing to Proctor's parking lots. Proctor's is a huge money loser because of its CEO. He more interested in investing in road shows and taking over other businesses than finally paying a PILOT. Ask him about finally paying a PILOT like Union and Ellis both do. He gets violent. People are finally getting in both these phonies faces because of the tax nightmare which they have caused. City DEM "leader" Dick Naylor must also be getting an earful from fed up taxpayers. It doesn't take $200,000 to switch a one way sign.
