Burlington Coat Factory has a single que line -- and at one time the LL Bean store in Maine did, too. I don'thave a problem with a single cue line --- I do object to "self check out lanes" though.
why? are you lazy...although I think if one does it there should be an automatic 5% discount on bill for the F'en service we did for them.......jmho....

I explained why I refuse to use the "self check out" -- but I'll do it again --- #1) I prefer going to a REAL person .. because if everyone uses the "self check out" .. stores will lay off the REAL persons ... and #2) it has been my experience that every time I have attempted to use a "self check out" ... something either refuses to scan or some other "problem" requires a real live clerk to have to come over anyway to manually enter the information. This happens if one is purchasing items which do not normally have a bar code on them --- like fruits or vegetables.

OK, to the first dumb troll point: Tomorrow when you all go to a store ask the check out clerk "Hi! How are you today." A good 4 out of 5 will say something like "Better in 22 minutes when I can go home!" or "Great, if I didn't have to work today!" or some other such trash bemoaning the fact that they cannot be at home playing Wi or watching Jerry Springer, or worse. (PLEASE ALL OF YOU- TRY THAT EXPERIMENT) So I don't give a flying frig about their jobs, which most of them value very little and love to complain about, because the people who make, program, and maintain these check-out systems are actually smarter, better paid, and more attentive to their careers than the average check-out boy or girl who cares for Sh!T about their work yet loves to get paid after offering complaints to the customer who are proffering hard earned coin so their lazy azzes can have a job. The ones who are pleasant, conscientious and hard working will quickly end up with a better job and the slackers who don't show for work or b**ch about it ad nausea will be the ones in the sh!t can. Besides, the morons who bemoaned the loss of buggy whip makers due to the onset of automobile really, REALLY have egg on their long-dead and forgotten faces, and so do you!
To the second dumb troll point: You are just a mentally challenged idiot if you cannot quickly come to terms with the technology and adapt it. What the Fu(K? Are you 91 years old? You can't enter items and hit a response on an idiot board (touch screen) or enter produce codes and use a digital computing device?
And THIS is why you are a troll, and are stuck in 1977. A perfect So-Schenectady, So-Rotterdam example of a person who will all but surely be lost to history, never add anything substantial to our world and be easily forgotten because he could not even so-much-as operate a check out device in a market.

So how many of you have asked the cashier "how they are today?" since I posted the above. I dare you to see what the result is. My finding is that 4 out of 5 responses will be how much better they will be when they are out of work or how better off they would feel if they did not have to work.

It isn't always that easy --- and I don't intend to use the "self check out lanes" anyway ... if there comes a day when a store replaces all of its check out clerks with self help check outs --- I will just find another store to do business at.

Personally, I think that some stores locally have already instituted this, although they don't officially have it. Evertry to go into Wal-Mart during any other time of year than right now? Maybe about 3 registers open, although I do like the fact that they have the cashiers trained to come out and check with customers to see if they're ready. 90% of the time I go into Price Chopper, I use the self checkouts. Any other time, I bag my own groceries. I actually SAVE the store money by doing this. Either A, they don't have to employ a person to check me out, or b, when I bag myself, there doesn't need to be another person paid to do it AND I use less bags than the bagger normally would, as I know how to pack bags better than their packers, so I save them more money again. The packers at Wal-Mart drive me crazy with their spinning packing stations.
I would refuse to shop at a store if all they had were "self check out lanes" --- that is my prerogative.
Personally, I prefer to shop at stores where the clerks actually acknowledge one's arrival, offer to be of assistance and provide assistance and answers to questions.

Sorry to burst your bubble, DVOR, but those days are long gone. I go to the cashier that seems to know the most about what I am buying. If the option is there, I know the most, therefore I will check myself out. Most of the kids that they have working the jobs at the places like Price Chopper and Hannaford have no clue about anything that's there, and they wouldn't know anything if the customers didn't tell them most of the time. That, along with the fact that some of the people at these stores look absolutely disgusting makes me go to check myself out more often when I have smaller purchases. In specific, I bring up one person that works the Altamont Ave Price Chopper. I can't stand to look at him for more than about 10 seconds. I could throw canned vegetables through the holes he probably calls "decoration" or "cool" in his ears.

Oh yeah, they are begging to be of assistance.
