The U.S. Postal Service, having lost 29 percent of its first-class mail volume in the last decade, will slow its delivery service beginning next spring -- the first time in 40 years -- in an effort to eliminate nearly $3 billion in costs for the cash-strapped agency. "We have to do this in order for the Postal Service to become financially viable," said David E. Williams, vice president of network operations for USPS, who noted Monday that the organization expects to have a $14 billion debt this year. Dec. 5, 2011: A not-so-jolly holiday season is on its way as the Postal Service announces it is slowing its delivery times to save money.
"We are adjusting operational realities to the current market," he said, adding that the trend is toward another 47 percent drop in volume between now and 2020. In 2010, the Postal Service processed and delivered 78 billion pieces of first-class mail, but the coming changes are intended at quickly trimming costs and averting bankruptcy. The reduction in turnaround time could slow everything from check payments to Netflix's DVDs-by-mail, add costs to mail-order prescription drugs, and threaten the existence of newspapers and time-sensitive magazines delivered by postal carrier to far-flung suburban and rural communities. The US Postal Service does a great job -- and performs quite well -- compared to postal services in other countries. And it does this at a postage rate that is lower than most other developed nations. I do NOT believe that email will totally replace "traditional mail" We just may have to be willing to pay a bit more for our postage stamps and the US Postal Service may have to cut some "fat" in its budget.

Hey.......the postal service put the pony express out of business....now the internet will put the postal service out of business. It ain't gonna get any better for them. They are just putting off the inevitable.
The pony express was more of a legend than anything else. It closed within a year, and was deeply in debt.
The only 2 services guaranteed by the constitution, are the postal service, and the census. I notice that bailouts, subsidies, corporate welfare, an insanely large military budget, and foreign aid to countries where the citizens never see a penny of it, are not.
We take it for granted, that that we can afford computers, their upkeep, and the cost of internet access. That's not to mention the learning curve, of which many people are unwilling, or unable to tackle.
What about those living hand to mouth on unemployment, or social security checks that come by mail. I predict an awful lot of late fees by credit card companies, who will charge it whether the payment is late, or not.
What of mail order? Amazon, Netflix etc? Even FedEx uses the US Mail in rural areas for the final stretch. A signed document that has to be delivered with proof of receipt? I'd rather not pay 10X the cost that it is now.
Who the hell said that the postal service was supposed to "turn a profit" in the first place? The pentagon, DOT, DSS, DHS, TSA, etc etc sure don't, and an awful lot of that money is just flushed down the toilet.
Dissolving, or crippling the postal service is just another part of The United States' downward spiral.
The US is #1 at absolutely NOTHING, other that military might, but we sure are good at faux patriotic country songs, and yelling WE'RE NUMBER ONE! USA! USA! USA!
I'd be willing to pay more for postage -- to keep the US Postal Service.

Party affiliation has NOTHING to do with the US Postal Service's financial problems. As for the Rotterdam Square Mall Post Office --- very few people used it when the mall was busy --- I worked in the mall for 8 years and NEVER used that post office ---- Heritage Post Office on Schuyler Street is a much easier to get in and out of -- has more services, etc.... is overall a better Post Office than the one in the mall.

Just a quick correction, or addition, the highways are also in the Constitution (I don't hsve the ability to quote it right now, but there was to be federal highways for moving the troops, if needed, and for delivering the mail (written, I believe as "post roads."))

When you want to ship a package on a Saturday morning, go to the Mall Post office. I could ship 1 package and get right back in line FOUR times in a row in the time it takes to ship one at Heritage station

I have never had a problem mailing packages at Heritage Station -- and it is a lot easier to get into and out of than the post office at the mall. Like I said before, I worked in the mall for 8 years and never used that post office.
Now if that post office were in a "stand alone" location -- or one that could be more easily accessed (for example the post office in Rotterdam Junction is a lot easier to drive up and walk into than the one in the mall) than I might use the postal facility.
