The council also heard about a plan from the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority that seeks to encourage more people to park around City Hall and take advantage of businesses in the pedestrian section of Jay Street. Metroplex is spending $90,000 on a business directory and street cameras on Jay, and wants to create more diagonal parking and pedestrian walkways around City Hall. The plan has no dollar figure yet.

The reason that they want people to park around City Hall is so people can take advantage of the parking meters which now charge 50 cents per hour up from 25 cents last year to allow people to park and shop. I have occasion to park near the post office and after the rates for parking were doubled people just stopped parking in that area and are seeking free parking lots.

That is exactly the reason!! Smooth, huh?

If life on Jay is so 'people friendly'............why the need to spend money for street cameras?
And if life downtown is so 'people friendly' and that folks are coming to SCUM-nectady in groves....why the need for a 'directory'? And further more............isn't it the job of the County Chamber to do that?

The city and the plex are running out of options on how to sell SCUM-nectady to the public. Proctors and Parades just ain't cutting it!! It's a sh!thole with drug dealers, drug addicts, pan handlers and thieves................and shooters! AND THAT IS THE FACT OF THE MATTER!

50 cents is a cheap price to pay to walk the street of bums and vagrants.

Why would anyone park around City Hall when there is a free lot next to the Pizza King (with a parking attendant) and the free lot (for the first two hours..or so) on Barrett Street which already HAS a pedestrian walkway right onto Jay?!?

Maybe Gillen should take a trip Downtown and see what is already there before spending money needlessly.

He really needs to find another job.

Yeah, if you can find a parking place with all the employees parking around city hall, even on the side where it is free parking for 30
minutes. That is supposed to be for the citizens.

That entire city hall area is scary at best! The last time I had to enter City Hall, I parked in the free parking lot. And by the time I got to the steps of city hall...........we were approached by a panhandler.

We told the panhandler to go ask the mayor for a handout....cause the mayor and the county leg has taken their lion's share of our money.

We also told the panhandler that the city mission and the bethesda house and the dss building were in walking or bus riding distance. We told him that the taxpayers are 'broke'!

Who the hell would hire him? He should be at the pollution plant. No free parking behind Proctor's during Green Market for the winter. Have fun walking from one of the outer lots dodging McCarthy voters because of Fat Morris and Death Ray.

I thought the city employees were told to stop hogging the parking. At least the panhandlers are honest about taking freebies.

So you are saying "bravo to reducing the taxable tax base" in the city.

Explain why you say "bravo to increasing taxes on homeowners."\

What is with this "bravo to the DRASTIC SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION in property values in the city
