We recently watched some show on public access where 2 guys show and item and then show the prices for the item. At the end they tally their imaginary shopping cart of about 12 items or so across a broad spectrum and it was surprising. Chopper was at $69 bucks or so, Shoprite was $67, Hannaford was at 55 and Walmart Super Center was at 52. We were definitely shocked by it. But part of shopping is ease and time. So if we need bread or something plus a few veggies we tend to hit what is fastest. I like to go to Sal's Market for meats at least once a week.

Right, and again you diss a business that is owned and ran locally.  But hey, it's probably paying it' full taxes at this location, unlike the corporate headquarters that stole jobs moving, tax free, to their new location, ripping job out of the town that you so love.  You should be singing Price Chopper's praises, since they are the leaders on the failure that is the Metroplex.

You and your buddies rammed Petta's unmercifully for days -- and now you have the audacity to question my preferring a supermarket other than Price Chopper ???     You and your ilk are a bunch of hypocrites.

I beleve what I stated about Petta's was exactly what my experience was with it.  As far as "my ilk," I am me, and I have no other names that I post on here, and I have different views regarding things in this area.  I am my own person and make my own decisions.  If you haven't noticed, I have no problem disagreeing with EITHER side of the aisle, I don't just follow the party line.  In fact, I think that Mr. Petta is a wonderful gentleman who only made one mistake, and that is siding with the people that he votes in lock-step with at the County Legislature.  I have had conversations with him in the past, and he knows my feelings on the situation.  You're the one that is the hypocrite that all of a sudden comes out stating that Rotterdam now has to start shifting businesses around in town "in order to build a higher tax base," as I believe you stated with trying to bring a big CVS into the front yards of many residents in town in a place it didn't belong.

It is interesting that you should post what you did -- because I am me -- I have no other names that I post on either.  I have different views and don't just follow the party line.  I am my own person and make my own decisions.

I never said that "Rotterdam has to start shifting businesses around town.  I have ALWAYS believed that it is up to the businesses to do the studies and market analysis -- and come up with the proposals as to where they will locate.  It is up to the Planning Commission and other governmental agencies to make sure that the proposals conform with ordinances and other regulations.

As for my position on the CVS -- I stand by it 1000% -- CVS is going to build a new store ... either at 4 Corners in Rotterdam or it will MOVE OUT OF ROTTERDAM and build it in Bellevue .... then we will lose it the property tax base and sales tax revenue.    BTW -  the "party line" was to oppose the CVS at 4 Corners and I believe that was a HUGE mistake -- and I am on the record as supporting the proposal.

How is it hypocritical to make up my own mind about a proposal and take a public position that is not only against the "party line" but is also unpopular ?    It is NOT hypocritical --- I believe in the LONG TERM the town's tax payers will regret the fact that its leaders were not willing to make an unpopular but wise decision.  Because in the end, every time our politicians have made given in to popular sentiment -- they have shouted on the mountain tops "Rotterdam doesn't want new business" and dug the hole deeper and deeper for tax payers.

Congratulations, maybe you need to show it a bit more.

Interestingly enough, if you put your comments at the town board meeting regarding this to these 2 comments, it actually goes to show that these are the exact opposite.  The fact that the tax base will be lost at the town level may go to benefit more people if it is done in the city, giving those people a closer location to move to, and to bring down more the insane amount that we pay in taxes at the county level.  Then, maybe we can backfill 5 Corners, just as we would need to do if CVS pulled out to go just down the street, as you suggest.  Actually, as things are at the moment, we wouldn't be losing anything in property tax base, as the building at 5 Corners would either stay the same (to pay the same amount of taxes as it is now, or have someone else move in.  Since the town couldn't get out of it's own way to have Walgreens come in at Curry and Altamont, maybe they will come back and consider at 5 Corners.

You are rather self-righteous --- since I have ALWAYS spoken my own mind and You on the other hand fall for the "party line" garbage that I post under more than 1 name (which I don't) or that I am some "big bad liberal" (which I am not) and on and on ....

It is about time that the No New Tax Party - No New Development types  got practical and realistic.   CVS is planning to move from 5 Corners -- stopping them from building at 4 Corners WILL NOT stop them from moving from 5 Corners.   Allowing CVS to move to 4 Corners will be a HUGE WIN .. because the vacant lot and eyesore building will be replaces with a thriving business that will increase the tax base  AND - it is my understanding - that there is already some interest in developing something else at 5 Corners.

Oh -- and for the record --- I supported Walgreen's coming to Rotterdam  -- and it was the GOP under Mertz and Tommasone who screwed that up.   I supported finding a good location for the proposed Super Wal-Mart which because then the Super Wal-Mart would have ended up in Rotterdam and NOT Glenville and the existing Wal-mart would have become a Sam's Club.   I also supported the ORIGINAL plan for the 25-A Study area which would have brought the Inter-Modal Facility and multiple millions of $ in investments to Rotterdam and NOT sent it down the line to Mechanicville.

I will ALWAYS support good sound economic development FOR ROTTERDAM as long as it complies with all applicable town, state and federal laws, codes, ordinances and standards.

Why not start a corrider of business on the west end of Town.....near I-88-and NYS Thruway.....would bring new customers from all

areas .....4 corners is loaded enough with traffic....and conjested...

Pose it to the new regime.....let's see what happens....it's not going to fly...because certain members live near Town Hall and in that
area of Town..nothing like walking to work....or will that person drive around the corner....pick one..

The Democrats have been encouraging economic development around Exit 25-A and Burdeck Street -- don't forget  John Paolino commissioned the 25-A study .. John Paolino wanted the REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED Town Board to give him permission get approval to run sewer lines under the Thruway to hook in the "western" part of the town and encourage economic development -- and it was the REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED Town Board who blocked him.

The Exit 25-A Study Commission (of which I have FIRST HAND knowledge of ALL of its proceedings) had put together a proposal that would have seen significant good and appropriate economic development along Burdeck Street,  across from Schalmont school along Duanesburg Road and would have included the Inter-Modal facility along I-88/I-90   -------------- but it was John Mertz and the REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED Town Board that chucked the MAJORITY REPORT and replaced it with a report written by John Mertz.  The one that basically shut down the area to economic development and gave us the "critical impact law" and other business killing policies.

The Democrats that are already on the Town Board (except for the soon to be FORMER Deputy Supervisor) and those joining them on January 1, 2012 ARE WELL AWARE of the need for appropriate and good economic development  in the western part of town and in other parts of town -- and are polar opposites of  the NNTP/GOP  candidates like McGarry and Tomaselli who are ANTI-BUSINESS and want Rotterdam to go backwards to a 19th century farming town   and the outgoing Supervisor and Deputy Supervisor who  -like the NNTP candidates - simply refuse to work with the County Economic Development folks.

Thatiswhy GREAT THINGS will happen begin to take shape in the next 2 years -- we will have at least 4 members of the Town Board who are willing to work with the county, state and federal government - AND WITH EACH OTHER  .. and who will pursue SANE, business friendly policies.

Guess if you're not on board with the Metroplex funding of for-profit, private businesses - then you're not 'working together'.

Schenectady/Rotterdam and all of the County has to get on board and:

1) Make sure businesses which are here DON'T LEAVE!
2) Bring in businesses WITHOUT BRIBES with taxpayers money
3) Stop PILOTS and tax-exemptions for every connected Plex player

The County has enough socialism with the all-too-generous welfare handouts. In addition, to use taxpayers money to fund private businesses creates an unbalanced economic environment (competition ceases to exist)  and cannot be placed on the taxpayers shoulders anymore. $40 per every $1,000 assessed value is triple the norm.
