Four years from now, the economy will be much improved and Schenectady will have made 4 more years of improvements and economic revitalization.  Thus, I am not worried about the future political prospects of the Democrats in general - and of Mayor McCarthy specifically - in Schenectady.

You guys are breaking wind all right....

Highly doubt that in 4 years that McCarthy will do anything to help the already over-burdened taxpayers. He's proved this by cutting NOTHING from the budget this year.

Along with a $3 million dollar golf course plan, lack of residency requirements for City workers, an entire tax exempt Downtown...4 years will only bring bankruptcy.

What we need to do is to consolidate the city and all the towns and villages with the county.

SCHENECTADY
Political head-scratching follows close mayoral race

BY KATHLEEN MOORE Gazette Reporter

Now that Democrat Gary McCarthy has been elected mayor, Democrats are trying to understand why they came so close to losing a race they thought they would easily win.
McCarthy squeaked into offi ce by just 89 votes over Roger Hull. And while McCarthy won, Hull made huge inroads in districts that had been Democratic strongholds. Hull won half the votes in the Stockade and other neighborhoods, as well as winning the GE Realty Plot, where he lives.
Neither side is quite sure why so many people in those areas voted for Hull.
“The Democrats should take the message from this to pay a little more attention to their constituents,” said Democrat county Legislator Karen Johnson, who also once won a very close Schenectady mayoral election. She said it’s clear many Democrats crossed party lines to vote for Hull because they felt that their party was not representing them.
“So how do we reach out to people who may have important opinions? We need to think about that,” Johnson said.
McCarthy said he was “reevaluating,” but insisted that candidates do that after every race, regardless of how tight the result. He noted that many of the city mayoral races have been close — though not this close.
“I broke those records,” he said, suggesting the race ended up being about leadership, not each candidate’s plans and goals.
Both candidates agreed on the city’s major problems and offered similar solutions: cut costs, demolish derelict buildings and encourage more homeowners to move in.
“The election was, who could best accomplish that?” McCarthy said.
And the answer, both sides said with frustration, was that many people didn’t care. The race brought in a record-low turnout of fewer than 10,000 voters.
Hull said of the turnout, “I was stunned.”
Eight years ago, almost 15,000 voters came out for another mayoral election in which neither candidate was an incumbent. Why didn’t those 5,000 voters return this time? ........................>>>>..........................>>>>..................................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00101&AppName=1

Riggghhhttttt.....people voted for Hull because the DEMS didn't campaign right....go with that.

It's not that the homeowners of the City are trying to sell their homes left-and-right to get out of a City which has WAY over-assessed their near-worthless properties to add thousands to their property and tax bills. No, that couldn't possibly be the reason.

It's not that the neighborhoods are being run by pit-bulls, there are shootings every weekend and social services is the main driving force for half the City population. No, that couldn't possibly be a reason.

Keep that thought McCarthy and continue to not cut anything from the City budget for the next four years, pay the $3 million to the golf course which hosted your fundraiser and pretend that the school system has NO influence on brining middle class people to the City.....

We'll see you in four years.....

Mayor Elect McCarthy ran a campaign without once mentioning his plans for the next four years. Only attacked Hull. It would be nice if once, after barely squeaking by, he reached across party lines. Dream on. NOTHING will change. The City will fall further into debt, more homes abandoned, more residents attacked at Council meetings, every tax and the new EMS fee increased. This is progress to out of town hicks. Hope many of you heard him on 1300AM. Same old tired clinches. The host was laughing. Learned nothing by the total rebuke by the voters. No shake up at City Hall. No new police chief. Karen Johnson gets it. The DEMS will tee off many more when they pick Marion Porterfield for City Council. Viva la resistance.

This is as obvious as one's nose on their face...DUH!!

This race brought in a record LOW turnout because most folks in the city are now at a record LOW mentality!!! Ya think they give a crap about a stupid vote when their main concern is where they are going to get their next 'fix'? Or where they are going to sell their next 'drug deal'? Or perhaps they were down state getting their next stash to bring upstate? They know they will still receive that government check every month that feeds, clothes and houses them. And the democops depend on that!! The city is clearly divided by the folks who actually 'know' how to vote.

What the dems have to do next to ensure the next election is by creating even MORE low life scum so they can live off the government teet and not give a sh!t about a 'vote'. The democops need to increase welfare benefits and legalize pit bull fighting. That will secure future elections and will create a city they can be soooooo proud of!

It is a created society that the democops can take full credit for!!!

5,000 voters have fled the jurisdiction. Why are there 800 abandoned homes? The DEMS don't even have money to knock ONE down. Gave it to DSIC and non profits. That's DEM progress for ya! The national economy may be better in 4 years. The City is in total economic free fall where revenues can never match exploding expenditures. Graham was right {as usual} about the pit bull owners. A key DEM voting bloc that cannot be offended.

Which one of the sock puppets? The closest race was not Mayor. It was for the fourth City Council seat. Margaret King won by only 30 votes. She couldn't even carry her Stockade. If the REPS/Alliance had both backed Madrea Chaires she would have won in a cake walk. Then we would have had a person of color on the Council that King is now screaming about. If she was so concerned about diversity why didn't she withdraw and endorse DEM Ms. Chaires?

No matter what the Dems say there are still 50% of Schenectady residents who don't like GM and that doesn't bode well for hs future.
