So is there a return on investment or not?
Quoted Text
Proctors: presenting, creating Schenectady theater part of company that creates musicals By TOM KEYSER, Staff writer Updated 07:26 a.m., Thursday, December 1, 2011 First paragraph of the article...................When "The Addams Family" opened Tuesday at Proctors, it delivered the first return on investment to the Schenectady theater, which five years ago helped form the company that created the show. Last paragraph of the article..............Morris says that despite the longevity of "The Addams Family," Proctors has not earned back its $150,000 investment — and doesn't expect to anytime soon. The investment was in the company and multiple shows, not just "The Addams Family." "It's an investment in the business that we're in," he said, "an investment in a long-term project. That means that Proctors, potentially, will have the opportunity to be engaged in this kind of creative conversation for the next 10, 20, 30, 40 years." "Creative conversation"? ROTFLMAO!! This what happens when you put a DEM history major from Jamestown, with zero business expertise, in charge of a community jewel. Proctor's should be involved in one thing-repaying the County. Another side investment WITH COUNTY TAXPAYER FUNDING. Where's the outrage from folks on both sides of the aisle? Silence, crickets chirping, and worse a Patroon award from the acting Mayor. Privatize Key Hall, privatize the horrible coffeehouse or close it and repay the County taxpayers. |

Silence? Crickets chirping? No complaints?... except on this board. The rest of the city seems to be proud of Proctors and attempts to revitalize the city. |

Nothing new. Proctors hasnt made any profits on anything except the Taxpayers money siting in their bank account earning interest. This money should be given to these blood suckers on an as needed basis, not in a lump sum to earn money on it. Its not their right.
This is the first of a long list of excuses that will be coming from Proctors as to why they are failing. People (In the whole country or the whole world for that matter) just arent spending on entertainment. They cant afford too. Spend $100 - $200 on a ticket or rent the movie from redbox for $1.
So Elephant Eye appears to be just as smart.....slowdown in the world wide economy, not working on Broadway so let's try and spread ourselves thinner by going all over the world building sets. Amazing.
That's what happened with "The Addams Family." Even though it featured Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane when it opened on Broadway in April 2010, it received a scathing review from the New York Times. Still, it will have lasted 21 months on Broadway when it closes on New Year's Eve.
Oken's production team strengthened the narrative, and the show that's on the road is different from the one on Broadway and receiving positive reviews.
"'Addams Family' is an example of something that's worked pretty well for us," Oken said. "It didn't work as great as we might have hoped, but we're in the process of opening it in South America and Australia and England, and there are licenses going to Asia and Scandinavia.

Please list Proctor's revitalization efforts. Not repaying the County taxpayers? Not contributing to ANY PILOT? Not contributing to Mayor Strattons fair share plan? NEWFLASH: Taking tax paying businesses permanently off the City tax rolls is not revitalizing anything. Now that the occupy movement is kaput Boxy will prop up local fat cat socialists. Starting with the fattest. |

Has anyone on this board attended this show? What did you think? Was it a good show? How full was the place? |

The DEM idiots don't seem to read too well. INSTEAD of repaying the County for millions dumped by the County taxpayers in aid Fat Morris invested in this horrible road show-WHICH IS A MONEY LOSER. Just like his Key Hall and the Fat Morris' coffeehouse. If he invested in a losing company on the NYSE the same cheer leader would be occupying Robb Alley. Morris is seriously talking about next opening a restaurant and taking another property off the City tax rolls. Death Ray has created a monster. The man that ate Downtown! |

Proctor's needs to worry about becoming profitable and repaying the County taxpayers. Not funding road shows. Not "investing" in money losing coffee houses. Not in opening more restaurants. Not in expanding their footprint. Enough is enough. The feeding frenzy over there must stop. Things Done Changed. |

I think this is a great long term investment in the arts -- and it means that Proctor's will have an influence not just on the arts in the Capital District but nationally -- and, potentially, internationally -- if this consortium can come up with a HUGE hit musical. |

If the City residents knew of the millions of dollars of their taxpayer money went into this location, there would be civil unrest. $9 million alone for a new stage from Metroplex and that's just the TIP of the iceburg! On top of that, there is no sales tax collected on ANY Proctors tickets. So, where are they contributing to the tax base - sales, property or otherwise??? |

It is really very simple ------>>>> the people who come INTO the county to see shows at Proctor's spend money at local restaurants and shops --- and pay sales tax on those purchases. Besides, the new stage at Proctor's allows bigger shows -- Broadway class shows -- to be staged there. It is well worth the $9 million INVESTMENT. |

$9 million was not an investment...it was a grant which never has to be paid back.
And please spare me about grants v. investments because if want to start that argument, then please tell me how much 'investment' money the County received back from the over 1/2 million in grants given to 440 State Street ...which is now going to be demolished.
Funny though, my brother went to a show at Proctors a few weeks ago and LOVED going to Saratoga for dinner. I asked him why he didn't come to Schenectady and he said that he'd rather have a nice meal rather than hang out at a bar. |
