New nursing home too costly

Nov. 29—ALBANY — Saying a new county nursing home is too costly and diverts money away from home-based services, a new report called for county legislators to reconsider plans to build a new nursing home.

In a report released Tuesday by the League of Women Voters of Albany County, the league said "We are not convinced that building a public nursing home is the best option and are concerned that both the costs of operating a public nursing home subsidized by property taxes and the limitations on the growth of home and community based services would not adequately serve the County residents."

County legislators have proposed building a $71 million, 200-bed home to replace the aging Albany County Nursing Home.

But Arleen Stein, a league member who co-chaired the committee that produced the study, said the elderly prefer to stay at home and the cost of a new facility is too high for taxpayers.

According to figures the county submitted to the state Department of Health, a new facility would generate an annual deficit of $37 million in the first three years of operation. The county would plug the deficit with taxpayer money.

County officials interviewed by the League of Women Voters told the group the deficit would actually be lower, but "we couldn't get any clear answers about what the real deficit would be," Stein said.

Albany is not stupid...they don't believe that running an operation which generates a $19 million dollar deficit is good for the taxpayers.

Anyway, the idiots in power in Schenectady County don't mind taxing the hell out of their residents. They always do the fiscally irresponsible thing...let them continue on the annihilation of the County taxbase with a $50 million dollar home.  

That way Albany can ship their elderly to Schenectady and the Schenectady taxpayers will be forced to paying for them as well. Again, Albany is not that stupid........

I'd like to know where Schenectady officials think they are going to get money to plug the deficit with their public nursing home when the taxpayer is at their limit already.

I'm tellin' ya....Schenectady was the county in NYS that raised it's hand in the air and said send everyone who needs 'help' come here....we are Under The Dome......

This is needed because Teresian House, Daughters of Sarah, and St. Margaret's Center (all found by entering nursing home in albany ny into google) aren't enough, and don't do the bidding of the taxpayer, right?  Oh, that's right, none of these are stealing from others to pay the bills for the elderly.

We were talking to a very active 84 year old woman today that lives in senior condos and has for the past 10 years. She said that today she feels like she is living in a nursing facility. She said that most all of the residents are either in wheel chairs or walkers and nurses and aides are going in and out all day long. She told us that this is the new government regulations.....that nursing care at home is cheaper than nursing homes.

So I have to agree with the LWV...that to build a nursing home when the government is gearing up for 'home care' will be a total waste of money.

Don't you read your DEM crap mailers? The new County home will not cost a penny according to these idiot liars. The Gazetto refuses to print the truth that it will cost County taxpayers $15 MILLION minimum. The deficit will be plugged by you. Our County taxes are 3X higher than Albany County-4X higher than Saratoga County. But the Stockholm Syndrome voters here like it that way.

Obamacare is getting out of the nursing home business. The government is slowly reducing the funding (medicare/medicaid)for these nursing homes. The schenectady democops haven't gotten that message yet!

But Albany County has. When are the DEM idiots going to break wind on their new SS Savage County Home? Had the bonding for 2 years. The one that won't cost a penny according to Gary Hughes and Petta? It's a great deal according to them. But they still think GE Solar is coming. DEMS will just raise County taxes 20% next year-its a non Election year.

It will be interesting to see what private company is put forward to build and operate the nursing home.  Keep your eye on a Republican Albany County legislator that works for a lobbying firm.  Just a shot on the dark.

maybe American Airlines could retire those old jets and get them converted to elder homes and they could run them for the government.....they're gonna get the F'EN $$ either way....both
