Longtime Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., will announce his retirement Monday at an afternoon press conference in Newton, Mass.
The 16-term lawmaker, whose name is emblazoned on the banking reform law that passed Congress last year, had long been rumored to be ready for retirement. He was previously chairman of the House Financial Services Committee but is now ranking member since Democrats lost the majority in the 2010 midterm election.
The Dodd-Frank law, a contentious set of provisions that Republicans say add layers of regulatory burdens without preventing potential future meltdowns, was made in response to the near collapse of the banking industry in 2008. Among other actions, it created a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to oversee access to banking products and required listing ratios of executive pay to median employee salaries.
Frank, 71, was first elected to the House in 1980, and is one of the first lawmakers to announce he is homosexual.
Republicans made a valiant effort to knock off Frank in the last election cycle, nominating Sean Bielat, a 35-year-old businessman and former U.S. Marine, who had made waves, but had little chance of knocking off a powerful incumbent in a strongly Democratic leaning district.
President Obama won 61 percent of the vote there in 2008. Sen. John Kerry, the home state senator who ran for president in 2004, pulled in 62 percent in the district.

He is probably retiring before any investigations are opened up by the House Ethics Committee as to his connection to the Bank "meltdown" and bailout.

He is retiring because his district was redrawn to include more CONS towns. He squeaked by last time and would never win again. Sound familiar?

But don't discount the fact that the GOP House Leaders  have been talking about investigating the financial meltdown -- Barney Frank played a role in establishing the policies that caused the meltdown ....    There have been a number of examples of Congresspersons and Senators who have retired so as to stop the Ethics Committee of their particular chamber from conducting an investigation.    Once a member of the house announces his or her retirement, the Ethics Commission (by tradition) refuses to take up any investigation of possible misconduct.

Madoff went to jail because he had no connection to the meltdown. He was a convenient distraction, not that he wasn't a criminal, from the fact that none of the culpable people in government or on Wall Street have been jailed for their financial crimes.
BTW, it seemed obvious to me at the time that someone warned the SEC off of investigating Madoff, yet there has never been an investigation there, nor will there ever be one.

Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geitner and Former Secretaries of the Treasury Henry Paulson and Robert Rubin should be investigated, prosecuted and imprisoned for their complicity in the bank/finance melt down.

It shouldn't be hard to believe -- the whole banking/finance mess was a conspiracy that started with a bi-partisan group of politicians  ... Ruben, Geitner, Paulson, Clinton, Gramm, et al -- it made the wealthy bankers and financiers even wealthier  and the average American got stuck losing their house and being saddled with the debt to pay for the bailouts/corporate welfare.

By the way, we still have not seen the fall out/full impact of the conspiracy ---- #1) the commercial real estate market bubble has not imploded yet .. and it will   and  #2)  a whole bunch of seniors and newly retired baby boomers are being talked into taking out "reverse mortgages" -- which will be the financial ruin of MANY American families and result in a lot of real estate/wealth being transferred from individual families to huge corporate banks and financial institutions.     (Basically -- reverse mortgages will ensure that the what is left of the middle class will be destroyed in the next 20 to 30 years)

Thought the early Christmas present was going to be DVOR leaving the site for another holiday season like he promised (and didn't follow through on) last time.  Well, I guess that's OK, Barney Frank calling it quits is a good second place.
