If McCarthy won the debate, the City would have had a Mayor by now.
Fact is, the yellow journalism is being noticed - even editorials asking if Kathleen Moore had attended the same debate were telling.
The fact is that declaring a winner in a debate is purely subjective. Example: Nixon won the 1960 Presidential Debates IF YOU LISTENED ON THE RADIO .... Kennedy won the debates if you watched on television. Personally, I don't think local political debates aired on the public access channel sway ANY voters -- why? because of the maybe 100 people (and I am being generous in that guess) who watch the cable access channel --- 40 are committed Democrats --- 40 are committed Republicans .. neither of which group will change their minds/votes and about 20 people are a bunch of doped up/boozed up people who confused the public access channel for an unusually worse than normal reality tv show on MTV. |

But you weren't there. Roger Hull kicked a** and even the acting yellow dog DEM supporters said so. If McCarthy won why wasn't the debate shown 24/7 on pathetic OSM? Because McCarthy fell on his face. The point is that OSM is under the DEM machine thumb. Leesa Perazzo has her only fundraiser at Key Hall. Totally inappropriate. Did she pay the full $2,000 fee? lol. What Proctor's does best is rape the taxpayer. Refuses to pay ANY PILOT including disgracefully refusing to pay any of Mayor Stratton's fair share plan. Union College-yes! Ellis-yes! Big Brothers-YES! Fat Morris-NOTHING-Go to hell! |

How do you know whether I was there or not? From what I saw, McCarthy did very well in the debate and Hull did not do very well. But -- again -- that is my subjective opinion which is no more or less accurate than YOUR subjective opinion. Finally, I don't believe the debate had ANY influence on the outcome of the election. |

Because I was there and you weren't. You are wrong as usual. In a City that is 2.5 DEM to 1 REP this is close because of the one debate that Roger Hull clearly won. This is not in dispute. That's why OSM/Morris pulled the plug. Every time people saw it Roger Hull picked up more votes. What Proctor's does best is screw the taxpayer, defraud the public and dodge any PILOT contributions that decent nonprofits make. |

Unfortunately for you - your opinion isn't the only one that matters -- and others believe that McCarthy won and that ultimately the debate had no impact on the actual outcome of the race. Interestingly -- you folks all claimed that McCarthy has ABSOLUTELY no support several months ago -- and the fact is that the race is extremely close ---- so either you folks were WRONG when you said that he had absolutely no support or McCarthy ran such a great campaign and did so well in the debate that he gained enough support to make it an extremely close contest. |

The City is spending $200,000 more than it is taking in every week. We don't need no professional Mayor to avoid bankruptcy. We must keep the current fiscal incompetents whose only concern is creating more lob jobs. The City takeover of the s*** plant will save $1 million? lol. No one believes these DEM fiscal incompetents. |

This what Proctor's does best-rip off the County taxpayers. Refuse to repay anything. Refuse to pay a Stratton fair share PILOT. And when you tell them to pay up they start yelling about increasing traffic for some governmental gin mill. The horrible Adams Family is typical of the pedestrian fare they call educational. Fat Morris has a few thousand extra tickets so you DEM morons go in and buy, |

The Addams Family is a musical -- it was billed as ENTERTAINMENT -- not as educational. Again the Nayboob Salami is caught in another attempt to lie and deceive. |

The Schenectady Proctor's Theater was built in the 1920s as part of a chain of motion Picture and vaudeville theaters... By the 1970s it had been reduced to showing porno movies... There are some on this board, who long for the days when Proctors only brought pornographers to Schenectady's downtown. Ah yes... those were the days. |

Box, in your first picture (circa 1970?) check out how many businesses line the street...a WHOLE bunch....and RETAIL!!!
Now check the current photo....hum, not so much.
State street PALES in comparision to what is once was...and back in that first photo, there wasn't $100 million taxpayers dollars invested.
That's a sad reality, but thanks for the visual.

I remember Schdy in the 70's. It was a pit. The city as a shopping destination was doomed... On October 5, 1970, the Mohawk Mall opened just up the road from the City. With three anchor department stores (Montgomery Ward, Boston Store and J.M. Fields) and seventy additional stores. Nothing the city could do would stop it's demise as a shopping area once the mall opened. Today the downtown would still look like the top pic, with another 40 years of deterioration... instead of the bottom pic. Shopping will probably never be Schdy's strong point... just as in most cities, malls have replaced downtown shopping. Specialty stores, restaurants, entertainment and city functions will still draw dollars to the downtown. As I posted much earlier, I DO occasionally go to downtown Schenectady... for entertainment, for a meal and for specialty stores. It took a lot to draw me to the area, and it wouldn't take much to discourage me from coming again. There is very little posted on this board that would entice any one to spend their dollars in Schdy. |

Great post. I agree with all you points and agree these posts dont help promote Schenectady. We are just frustrated. I own multiple properties and many of my mortgage payments with escrow are up 25% in 5 years. I am at a fixed rate for all of them so the increase is entirely taxes and fees. I am seriously interested in hearing your ideas for what direction we should be taking in the City. Do you think it is on the right path or should something else be tried/done? |
