Quoted from Box A Rox
If I were a parent looking at colleges for my kids,  I would run like Forrest Gump away from Schenectady and Union college, based solely on this board's comments.

You're half right here Box. According to Barron's and USA Today College breakdowns, Union is still a top-notch college, but students are afraid of the City. I'll find the verbage for you, but USA today did say that the City is a thorn in the side of Union.

Why do you think they've NEVER taken the gate down? Historical significance or security?? 10% to the 90%.

Holey Moley Folks

How many kids go off to college in other states and don't stay there after graduation?

Been to many colleges and most of them are in areas just like Schenectady....  and even scarier...

Years ago, Union College did not some under the scrutiny of what the city looked like.....remember

the voters put both Dems and Reps in office...so if anyone is to blame for all of how the City looks

it's all that take responsibility.....Always pointing the fingers is what is ruining our whole country.

There is no compromise and it's not about the people anymore...

Union College is a top notch college and that is all that should be said....

Totally agree Patches, but the reality is that many prospective college students do not chose Union due to the high crime of the City. That's a fact....and I assume that's why Roger Hull decided to buy Seward.

Union college is known for it's superior education. It is considered one of the most affluent colleges in the country. The college has some of the best educators and has graduated some brilliant students!! There has never been a question in anyone's mind about that.

But to disregard the fact that some parents and students have concerns about safety in Schenectady, is just plain foolish. It is a fact that no on can deny or fluff over!!

Union college is schenectady's jewel....not proctors or central park!!

Agree....

But, with education the foremost goal, parents may be obliivious to crime statistics.

Crime happens in many elite colleges.....shootings, rapes, muggings, and molestation...

Who would have thought about the latter crime?......these days it doesn't matter where you chose to go.

The truth is you are not safe anywhere....and the kids off to college have to be prepared and be vigilent.

The REAL PROBLEM is that for about 40 years from 1960 through 2000 --- the Republicans controlled the Schenectady County Legislature -- and controlled the Governor's office --and controlled the State Senate -- and for most of that period we were represented by GOP State Legislators --- who allowed the city and county to slide into "rust belt status" and it was the REPUBLICANS who raised our county taxes to the record high levels.

Democrats have only taken control of the County Legislature the past 8 years -- and have LOWERED taxes 4 times --- and made a LOT of positive changes -- but it is going to take a number of years to grow out of the economic mega-depression that the Republicans brought our county.

Those ARE the facts --- the Nayboobs will squeal wildly like the ignorant piggies that they are -- but those ARE the irrefutable facts.

it was generational.....not political party driven.....it went from hippies to yuppies.....then their kids "let your money work for you" and 'just do it' aka: 'get all you can'

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

USA Today gave Union A's and B's for campus, academics, etc and the lowest grade of a a C was given for the city it is located in.

Quotes from students at Union College from USA Today:

Cristi - Freshman "The one thing I would change about Union would be the location. I would just rather be in a somewhat nicer area."

Louise - "There are some shops and restaurants downtown and some bars within walking distance of campus. It is, however, not the safest city."

Kate - "The one negative thing about Union is that the campus is open to the city of Schenectady. While the signs say it is a closed campus, people from the city tend to walk through campus day and night and there are many cases of robbery throughout the year."

Crime, vacancy and ignoring the problems in the City will spread like a virus. Being positive is one thing, but let us all begin to take off the rose-colored glasses and stop lying to ourselves. Schenectady needs an intervention, it needs to have the issues addressed like pit bulls, declining home values, high taxes and the weekly shoot-outs (the one on Union Street a few weeks ago was one block down from the college).

Lalalaaaaa la laaaa lala All is well! Renaissance!

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

The important thing is that the Renaissance has started .... let's work together and keep producing positive results for Schenectady.

The Black Death has also started. Hopefully there are homeowners left to experience your Renaissance.

Actually if I had my way, everyone would be on the beach - feasting on Texas-style barbecue, enjoying some tequila and mingling and dancing and romancing - from the time the sun sets until it rises again.
