For a lot of years, I worked in Schenectady, but never WENT there. I would bypass the city if possible.
I now occasionally go to Proctors performances, and occasionally see a movie in Proctors. I shop the Greenmarket about once a month, and can't drive near Villa Italia with out stopping for canolis. I've shopped at Perreca's, Bombers, and occasionally stop at Pinhead Susan's.
I don't minimize the problem of crime or taxes, they are real problems. But compared to the Old Schenectady which only gave me reasons to avoid the city, Schenectady today has something to offer.
I'm sure this news will be met with ridicule, but for those who don't realize what you have in your Downtown... if you think it's bad now, just wait till you lose it.

The problem with the City is that when the tax-exemptions end Downtown, these businesses will leave. The problem is, you and others may visit Downtown, but you all breathe a sigh of relief when you leave here. Years ago, at least people could afford the taxes and could buy property. Years ago, people WANTED to live in Bellevue (I was one of them!). Years ago I would safely walk down Campbell Avenue and Union Street ...not so much anymore. I'm glad you like coming here once in a while - but I'd rather have you be able to afford to move here and live in a safe neighborhood - but that's just me. |

Seeing as how I don't even read the Times Union -- I find it remarkable that the Nayboob idiots think that I wrote something in it -- remarkably ignorant even for a bunch of lead chip eaters like the Nayboobs.
And yes - BOX - Schenectady is MUCH better today after 8 years of Democrats working together to improve it. |

Back before the 100 million wasted dollars were spend on the miracle 2 blocks that is Schenectady many of the stores/shops fled the city for larger shopping centers. Now there is a place to go to see an overpriced second rate show and get drunk if you wish in the gin mills that were built. While you're enjoying your evening there you may even catch something extra like a stray bullet. |

The City is only better for visitors who can visit once every three to six months... As for the people who live in the City, pay the increadibly high taxes and get shot at...not so much. |

If you think your taxes are high now, just keep chasing away visitors who spend their dollars in Schenectady. |

Read the story again. When they say working together they mean screwing the taxpayers. Picking the carcass. One party never works-ask Cuba. The median price of a home in the City is going under $100,000. Lowest in the area. Over 800 properties on the market with no buyer in site. Realtors won't even take City listings because they can't close them. The DEMS have destroyed City finances which loses $200,000 a week because of unchecked fiscal incompetents running amok. No one will buy property in the City least of all DEM morons who moved to the sticks long ago. Either get skin in the game, purpose economic cuts to turn this mess around or shut up. |

Again, I would rather have you as a next door neighbor than see you at the green market on occasion. Listen, I have much invested here and it won't get better if another tax-exempt gin mill opens Downtown. It will get better when the gin mills pay taxes, the homeowners taxes come down and people like you and DVOR cheerlead from within the City..not from outside it. |

Exactly, How do we get a list/schedule of the commercial businesses and how long there tax exemptions last. That way we can celebrate either in the year that they start to pay or the year they move to another jurisdiction. Either way these properties should be boycotted. Another idea is to create a list and a seal or sticker for each business who proudly doesnt live off the government teat. I want and will only support them. |

Troy is improving because of the tens of millions of dollars of state money that State Senator Joe Bruno directed to Troy ----------- we on the other hand are represented by an incompetent, self-serving, triple-dipper named Hugh Farley who has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for us in 35 years.
took--laundered and redirected......Ahhhhhemmmm now we get to call a stadium after his highness |

Actually, I was thinking the same thing, but the opposite way. Each business that has had a grant or a loan from the Metroplex should be required to have a sticker / sign on the front of their business that the operation has been funded by taxpayer money until the day that they are paying their full taxes, and have paid back such loans. They can even use the beautiful Metroplex insignia. The following should be listed under the above...
Quoted Text
No real estate taxes paid from this location for the period of 19xx-20xx or Real Estate value lowered by xx% for this location for the period of 19xx-20xx or Building purchased with grant money in the amount of $xxx, xxx.xx
(The last would have to be permanently on the building until the property is sold. If sold more tham one time through the Metroplex, this would be the CUMULATIVE number of the amounts of money used. |

You should be able to just call them. Also, there is a list, somewhere, of all their "successes" on their website, somewhere. Check the "See the results" down in the left hand corner at the bottom of http://www.schenectadymetroplex.org/ |
