Young, Gay And Homeless: Fighting For Resources
by MARGOT ADLER

A number of studies of homeless youth in big cities put forth a startling statistic: Depending on the study, somewhere between 30 and 40 percent of homeless youths identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

It's largely because gay youths are more often kicked out of their homes than straight youths. And even if they are not kicked out, they may feel so uncomfortable that they leave.

In New York City, nearly 4,000 young people are homeless every night — many of them gay.

Reaching Out To Homeless Youths

On the Christopher Street pier in Greenwich Village, where dozens of gay and transgender youths hang out, Carter Seabron and Elena Wood of Safe Horizon's Streetwork Project hand out snacks, condoms and information. The organization sends out several nightly teams to find homeless youths.......................>>>>.....................>>>>.................................http://www.npr.org/2011/11/20/142364493/young-gay-and-homeless-fighting-for-resources

I realize this world is made up of all types of folks but it scares the $ out of me at the lack of compassion many have for another human being.   I have no right to ask or tell anyone to change after all I wouldn't want anyone doing that to me but for a person to think nothing about a human being's life as being important I wonder what is?

I believe many of these kids are truly gay etc.  some are not, they are fad followers but for those who are gay, transgender etc. my prayers go with them.

does it matter that they are gay? does it matter that they are vets? does it matter that they are schizophrenic or other?

let's see what to do? choices?

1. make the government punish the parents
2. make the government check out everyone's psyche-health
3. make the government get into everyone's personal choices

or how about treating them like every other human being with the programs that are out there...ie: food/housing/water etc....

so what if they are gay,,,,they are not more equal than any other homeless person....MTV has fixed the next generation and there will be less gay folks on the street.....they will go the way of Archie Bunker

This is such a trash story to begin with Cel.

There are over 8 MILLION people that live in NYC. Your talking about an non-issue that involves .0005% of the total population.

Let's talk about starving kids in Africa, or child fighters, or female mutilation...You know, serious stuff

I appreciate your compassion, Cel. My problem with these kinds of stories is that they fail to mention that many homeless kids (straight kids and girls too) are what we used to call runaways, and it is hard to have sympathy for young people who took off because they felt like it, because at home they had to follow a few rules. How do you offer decent shelter to kids without encouraging kids to leave home? There's the dilemma.
It's also a problem that we in New York have so many professional adult loafers on the public dime that more vulnerable populations aren't being served. A minor kicked out of his home just because he is gay deserves to be placed in a residence at the parents' expense. You are responsible for supporting your school aged children but we also seem to be moving away from that idea in New York today.
