The reason that Schenectady was so great back then --- there were no Nayboobs --- Republicans and Democrats loved their hometown and worked together to make it a great place. "Back then" there were no 100% property tax exemptions for businesses. There were no taxpayer funded gin mills, no taxpayer funded theaters, no taxpayer funded restaurants, no taxpayer funded hair salons, no taxpayers funded bakeries, no taxpayer funded appliance stores, etc.
Homeowners did NOT have to bail out failing businesses. See, DV, because you do NOT now nor ever paid property and school taxes, you have absolutely no clue what it's like to be a homeowner, struggling financially in a tough economy, trying to decide whether you are going to make the repairs to your house as ordered by the government or are you going to pay the SUPER HIGH taxes as ordered by the government.
Back then, DV, if business couldn't make it, oh well, tough sh*t, if they failed, they failed. But today, YOUR OWN SOCIALIST BRAIN says that homeowners MUST foot the expenses of the businesses. Downtown thrived because homeowners had money to spend, and it was the homeowners choice---NOT the governments orders--as to which business the homeowners would choose to their money. But in YOUR pea-brain, you want the government dictating to the homeowners which businesses they MUST fund. I thought we lived in a country oif freedom, freedom to make our own choices to which businesses we will spend money, but in Schenectady, it's the government dictating to the homeowners.

I worked on Mr. Robert's campaign for Mayor (the Roberts, Johnson, Carpenter and Notar team) in the late 1970's while I was in high school. Personally, I think that after he lost that election - Mr. Roberts lost the spirit that originally made him an attractive candidate for public office. After he lost a bid a few years later for the NYS Assembly, he left the city all together. I was not involved in Robert's 1982 campaign for the State Assembly because of a commitment that I made to the late Assemblyman Clark Wemple and my late uncle, Judge George Severson. Frankly, I am quite happy with the representation that Jim Tedisco has provided that Assembly District over the years -- so I don't regret staying out of that campaign.

I worked for the entire ticket not just one candidate. The Democratic ticket that year was a great one and I have absolutely no regrets supporting the ticket.
