Task force reviewing suspicious fire cases
By PAUL NELSON, Staff writer
Updated 09:19 p.m., Monday, November 14, 2011

SCHENECTADY -- A task force of local, state and federal officials is discussing several suspected arson cases and four recent suspicious blazes, according to fire Chief Michael Della Rocco.

"There has been a fairly high level of activity over the past week," Della Rocco said Monday of the half-dozen fires in the city from Nov. 6 to 13. There doesn't appear to be any connection among them, but that is something we'll be looking at."

During their Monday gathering, the fire experts took a closer look at the evidence in the blazes that occurred at homes on McClellan and Strong streets, Forest Road and at Schenectady High School on Election Day. The other two fires at residences on Division and Albany streets were caused by careless smoking, Della Rocco said.

He said a fire is typically labeled suspicious when fire investigators begin focusing on human causes after ruling out natural, electrical and mechanical reasons...................>>>>...................>>>>...................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/loca.....38.php#ixzz1dlsyKpZL

Are they going to look at the case at Eastern and McClellan? Oh, that's right, they can't, the city had the crime scene plowed under at taxpayer expense.

Fires have city officials suspicious

BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
Reach Gazette reporter Justin Mason at 395-3113 or jmason@dailygazette.net.

Officials are investigating a string of four suspicious fi res that occurred across the city over the past week, including one that emptied Schenectady High School on Election Day.
In total, Fire Chief Michael Della Rocco said crews have responded to a half-dozen significant fires over the past week. Of those, he said, four are still considered suspicious.
A $500 reward is now being offered for information leading to an arrest in a fire that broke out at 1033 Forest Road on Sunday. Della Rocco said fi refighters put up reward posters on the burned-out building this week and have already received several tips.
The fire broke out in the vacant two-story, wood-frame structure about 3:15 a.m. A crew of 26 fi refighters had the fire under control in about two hours.
“We feel it’s an incendiary fi re,” Della Rocco said
Fire also scorched an occupied building at 106 McClellan St. on Nov. 6, forcing the evacuation of six people. The following day, a blaze broke out in an unoccupied brick building at 873 Strong St., causing signifi cant damage.
The fire at the high school Nov. 8 was enough to fill part of the building with smoke, prompting an evacuation of both students and voters for more than two hours. That small arson was limited to a bathroom trash can. ......................>>>>...........................>>>>.......................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01204&AppName=1

I was told that there probably had been squatters in that two-family house I've been talking about that's right next to Howe School in the upper Union area. Maybe we could train cops to spot signs of illegal activity and then to look for them as they drive through. Although they could be doing that now, Idon't know. I know a bunch of people who reported a blatant drug house in a "good" residential area only to be told that the house was being "watched".
Can't knock down dangerous, burned out buildings in residential areas, can't check for squatters and illegal after hours bars, but a historic (and beautifulinside, once) building in someone's way of making a buck off the taxpayers, we'll get right on that, sure.

That would mean they would have to get out of the car.
