Sharp eye on 'every vote'
Schenectady mayoral race still tight after first batch of absentees, and it's not over

By LAUREN STANFORTH, Staff writer
Updated 11:16 p.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2011

SCHENECTADY -- Democrat Gary McCarthy maintained his lead over Alliance Party challenger Roger Hull after the first day of absentee ballot counting ended Wednesday, with the acting mayor holding a 83-vote lead over the former Union College president.

In a time-honored ritual of democracy, attorneys representing both candidates spent the day in a large conference room at the Schenectady County Board of Elections scrutinizing each ballot, in the end getting to only 136 ballots out of 631 to be tallied. Counting will resume Thursday morning and could last into Monday.

Meanwhile, there is no decision yet from state Supreme Court Justice Vincent Reilly on Hull's request to count all 9,000 paper ballots that voters fed into the optical scan machines on Election Day. The Alliance Party founder contends that the optical scan machines at Schenectady High School may have been compromised when they were unplugged and moved outside during a fire and bomb scare. It's expected that Reilly will file his decision Thursday.

Hull shocked Democrats the night of the election when he came close to ending their eight-year rule of the city's top post. The tally, 4,504 to 4,427 favoring McCarthy, is the narrowest mayoral race margin since the 2003 contest between former Mayor Democrat Brian U. Stratton and Republican Peter Guidarelli. McCarthy, who was serving as City Council president, became acting mayor when Stratton left for the state Canal Corporation in April.

As absentee ballots were opened Wednesday, Hull never came close to slimming McCarthy's lead. However, there are still 33 out of 44 districts left to count.

County election commissioner, Republican Art Brassard, said sometimes when a win seems imminent, challengers will concede the race and pull their attorneys out of the counting room. But Hull campaign manager Brian Young said Hull's highest performing districts have not been counted yet...................>>>>........................>>>>.....................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Sharp-eye-on-every-vote-2272047.php#ixzz1dxX492XD

McCarthy's defeat would be one of the only saving graces for this struggling City.

And the DEMS are fighting it. There needs to be a full City recount. The DEM attorneys are also objecting to every REP abstentee ballot. All these will be counted later. Vince Riggi won by running on a shoe string. The idea that he bought office is insane. The Mayor's race will be decided by a handful of absentee votes. A far cry from the DEM moron predictions.

It will be and obviously 'is' a close vote. Due to the issues at the school's polling place, there clearly should be a recount.....no matter who wins.
Hull shouldn't be the only one requesting a recount....so should Gary McCarthy. It just makes sense.

There is nothing close about it --- the people have soundly booted the NNN/ALLIANCE A**HOLES out to the curb. God Bless the Mayor! We needed a man of his caliber -- not a dickhead like Hull with no experience in governing..
