Chief wants more officers
Niskayuna police chief would like more to help keep up with growth

NISKAYUNA -- Police Chief John Lubrant knows that budget woes preclude him from going back to the days of a 31-member department, but he would settle for just one or two more cops to keep pace with the commercial growth in town.

"I don't want to convey the message that the sky is falling, and this is not about one budget or one year or one cop, but it's a slippery slope and an incremental erosion of service," said Lubrant, who said Balltown Road could become a "miniature Wolf Road," a reference to the Colonie's bustling thoroughfare.

The veteran lawman worries the volume of 911 calls expected to increase from the new ShopRite supermarket and nearby remodeled CVS drugstore plus the opening next year of the Stanford Crossings shopping plaza across from the Mohawk Commons mall on Balltown Road along with new housing could put a strain on his 27-member force. Yeah, there's so much need for the officers in Nisky that they have one of their officers right here in Rotterdam now.  Was driving past the RPD earlier, and saw a NPD car parked there.
