Quoted from 1251
uhhh.......what's your definition of a violent crime ????
Apparently the September 2010 shoot out in front of Bombers isn't classified as a 'violent crime' by SB - as for the man who was shot, I bet he'd classify this as violent. |

Perhaps we too, live in the city....perhaps?
Most of us don't know who the other is... I could live in Rotterdam or Nisky but most realize I am a Schenectadian. If we keep focusing on what is wrong and not a solution for those wrongs we will never get anywhere. The cameras are anattempt to find a solution. Does it need to be tweaked? It looks like it. Keep in mind this is all new to our PD. So which one of you on the board are going to get from behind the keyboard and make a phone call to find out the facts directly from the PD? Personally I'd bypass Chief Chaires and go right to the Commissioner. |

Cameras are a great idea and effective as well as long as there is the man/woman power to look at them 24/7 so as to catch the criminals in the act before they are able to hurt any residents. There isn't enough police to man the cameras and the criminals that have been caught were identified through the stored images on the cameras equipped to do that. Do the residents want the cameras to prevent violence or to be used to catch the criminals after the crime is committed. |

Cel, I agree with you 100%. Here's my take on the situation: the police department makes a HUGE announcement of tasers...but not everyone will be able to be trained on them. Then there is another HUGE announcement about cameras....but there is not 24/7 coverage of the cameras. And there was a HUGE announcement about a $350k survey about how the department is doing. The people who are running this department are running it poorly. They are not hiring the right people, they aren't giving proper training and ultimately it makes the officers look bad. It's not the officers doing poorly, it's the $100K pension sucking elitist in the department who need to be fired. The department has to be working with the officers, not against them. |

Bottom line is that the city government has created, by invitation, the bottom feeders of society to live here while we so graciously support their a$$! This society was 'created' and don't fool yourselves into thinking otherwise.
They try to baffle the folks with bullshIt on how competent they are and how they are trying to get a handle on crime with 'cameras'! Give me a break. It is just job security for the union public safety folks and a vote getter for the same politicians that have created this society.
So if you want to get all warm and fuzzy over a few cameras....have at it!
As for myself.....it is all smoke and mirrors and an excuse for BIG BROTHER!!! |

Also, one could ask the following questions. Is it best to announce that new cameras will be put up and where or would it be best for the police to keep it on the down low and stealth. A lot of times cameras do nothing but move the crime to anoher area away from the visible surveilance. |

They have already tried 'unmanned' security cameras. What good has it done for the greater good of the city of schenectady? NONE!! Instead it is home to TWO, not one, but TWO Hamilton Hills. If cameras were the end all to crime, why didn't they place cameras around Marcella's when they were on Crane Street? It's all bullshIt!
The cops will NEVER get a handle on the crime in the city UNTIL they lower the welfare benefits. And the city will never rid the area of slum lords while the taxes are out of control. And we won't even bring up a school district that can barely graduate 50% of their graduating classes. The city is crawling with drug dealers and drug addicts. And that is a fact!!
No matter what they do.....the scum on the streets have more ammo than the entire police dept. The cops have been cut off at their knees with a created scum bag, dumbed down society.
The city scum are smarter and are better armed then the cops!
The 'camera story' is just a fluff story!! |

The first thing that needs to be done is A COMPLETE AUDIT OF THE DSS BUILDING!
How many people from Downstate come to Schenectady every month to get their checks and food stamps at their PO Boxes? How many people come to live in Schenectady simply because the welfare benefits are easier to get here than anywhere else in the State?
It would save the County millions if one thorough audit was done and it would have the abusers of the social services system move elsewhere.

We happen to have a friend who works for the state. Their dept does audits of the social services depts. Do you know what they do? They work with the municipality and 'suggest' how they could change things to become more efficient. THEY SUGGEST and they WORK WITH!! How far ya gonna get with that? And there are many many many folks who do not live in the county....or even the state for that matter, who use a relative's address. There are folks who live down south and receive nys benefits via their parent's address!! Then ya got your down state city scum who visit once a month to get their food stamps and welfare checks. Perhaps we could SUGGEST that we don't do that anymore! |

Exactly!! Start doing home inspections and stop this County taxpayer abuse. Farley the Younger tried to get this done for years and was preventing by the working together idiots. The new County home will not cost a penny and they created 5,000 jobs when 1,753 were lost. The DEMS got the Joseph Gobbels thing down cold. Keep repeating the lies and the some morons will believe it. Cameras do nothing especially when unmanned. This political ploy did nothing to stop Vince Riggi and Roger Hull. |

Statistics from the Schenectady Police Department bear him out. They show that violent crime in the area encompassing downtown is relatively nonexistent compared to other zones in the city.
Statistics for the downtown zone show there were no murders, six robberies and four aggravated assaults (which involves menacing) during the hours of 4 p.m. to midnight between January and August. These numbers comprise 0 percent, 8 percent and 1.4 percent, respectively, of total crime in the city for the same period. There were two reports of rape, but police classified them as acquaintance rape, meaning the suspect knew the victim. |

Your just proving our point that too much attention is paid to the downtown. No crime according to you but still getting more cameras. |

They need to install cameras on the outside of the High School to catch Lumpy at work. Recycle the Pat sign you threw in the bushes on McClellan by The Plaza. Crime is way up in the City and the DEM solution is more unmanned cameras that provide a false sense of security. |
