The title of this thread is the very reason that I am so upset with the Nayboobs and Tea-Partiers --------- there is absolutely no good reason to constantly run down, put down and tear down our community and its name.

No one has ever said that Schenectady - city or county -- and the surrounding municipalities are perfect --- but take some pride in your community.  Stop the needless mockery and bashing of its name ... try to find the positive things and build on them.    If you find problems that need to be addressed - put forward POSITIVE, CONSTRUCTIVE IDEAS to address/correct the problem.  

That is why I have no respect for people like Vince Riggi, Pat Zollinger, Joe Surhada, John Mertz,  Tomaselli, Hugh and Bob Farley ---- they constantly run down and tear down our community .. they are NEGATIVE and NASTY  and haven't offered anything constructive  in years -- if at all.

Fact is, there are cameras now and it's not helping fight crime. Half the cameras are decoys and the others are completely unmanned.

It's like a poorly run security system which cost the taxpayers millions.

Cameras have already provided evidence in several homicides, as well as burglaries and othera assorted crimes.

Up until last year, caemaras were paid for thru grants and private sector partnerships (business associations, Union College, CDTA).
Half of the cameras are decoys - totally inaccurate.

Cameras are not always manned but they can be accessed upon demand.

bumblethru, In regards to the title of this thread it is Schenectady not SCUM-nectady.  I take offense to your calling it what you did. You are insulting the city I live in.  There are many worthwhile things about this city.  No, we are not perfect and yes we have crime but we are no different than many other cities in NY.

There have been numerous occasions camera footage has been used to solve a crime, murder included.

This was also reported in the papers.

I would like to see Commissioner Bennett do more to inform the public about the good things our police are doing.  More information about the goals and plans for the future.  He is always at city council meetings to field any questions that come up.

He also is available via email or phone. Scroll down on this page. http://www.schenectadypd.com/contact/index.php  Folks should ask him directly to provide facts where these cameras played a roll in catching criminals.

anyways --- security cameras are a great idea --- they have been helpful when used in other cities and in the parts of Schenectady where they have been used

According to DA Carney in an article he wrote entitled "Schenectady's Public Surveillance Camera Project" he stated "The cameras are most useful when a trained operator is monitoring ongoing street activity."

Tell me Visitor, who's manning the cameras 24/7? Answer - no one is monitoring them all the time.

Also, according to the article "The PSCP cameras record images that are stored digitally for 2 weeks." So, if after 2 weeks, no one looked back at an unmanned frame where possibly a crime occurred, it's now gone and not archived.

Please SB, you still believe that no crimes occur Downtown. Guess that's why they're installing the first 2 cameras at Proctors and Broadway.
