If the REMS taxing district passed this could have been prevented. Those who voted no have blood on their hands.

Do you think Gary will issue a ticket for talking on her cell while driving to next of kin?

I heard the helicopter go over my house in the upper Union area. It would be hard to get a car into the water in that area, what a freak accident. Must be nobody knew what was going on until emergency vehicles arrived.

What I don't understand is why an 80 something year old female was doing in the stockade, down by the river, at 8pm on a Friday night.  Kinda doesn't make sense.

However, it's unfortunate - RIP.

SCHENECTADY -- Police have identified the elderly woman who died after driving her car into the Mohawk River Saturday night.

Schenectady police report Mary B. Conroy, 84, of Waterford, died in the accident.

Conroy called 911 at 7:57 p.m., just before her sedan went into the water at the end of North Ferry Street in the city's Stockade neighborhood. Schenectady police Lt. Mark McCracken said the caller said she didn't know where she was and that she needed help, but then the call disconnected. The cell phone signal was traced to Riverside Park. Police arrived and found Conroy's vehicle already sticking nose-first into the river. Officers saw Conroy in the car, but said she was unready unresponsive. Before they could remove her, her car slipped into the water, McCracken said.

A dive team recovered her body around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. An autopsy is being done to determine the cause of death. McCracken said it's unknown why Conroy was in Schenectady.

Someone reminded me that there was one of those "prettification" projects done down at the end of that street a while back. It is possible that the unsightly guardrails were removed and something less recognizable and therefore more confusing to an impaired driver was installed. I don't believe the story that she was sitting in the parking area, had an attack and her car rolled across the park into the river, I think she got confused and drove there. It wouldn't really matter as the poor woman is dead, except that with any vehicle accident you need to know the cause to see if there is something that needs to be done to prevent future problems.
I don't see why anyone would come on here and start name calling over this.

If you look at this link and then go under birds eye view you will see there isnt much there to stop a car on the right side of that semi circle on the parking lot side.

From a google maps, street view it looks like a straight run into the river.
