The NIFTY DONUTS shop was roughly across from the now Gallo Florist shop.   They were in a multi-use bldg.  Also just before the GALLO FLORIST bldg. heading toward CURRY RD. was a BIG DOMS sub shop.   This was in the 70's.   They had great subs.   They were out of TROY.    I remember seeing the donut shop signs posted on the outfield fence of the local Little League/Babe Ruth ball parks.   BTW K-MART started out as S.S. KRESGE.   They were in downtown Sch'dy along with GRANTS,WOOLWORTHS.   How about the WETSONS burger place on Altamont.   They were located where McDONS. is now.   Also was one at corner of NOTT ST.  across from the BIG N store that was there (now GOLUB HQ'S)   They had orange colored/white signage.   One more-the BONANZA STEAK HOUSE in the now PC plaza on ALTA AVE./CURRY RD.   They were like a PONDEROSA STEAK HOUSE.

Thanks Mr. M.......don't remember Nifty at all.....Big Doms was always the last stop after a night of carousing  ........Knew about Kresge/Kmart.....Wetsons on Altamont is vague to me as is the Steak house.......funny how some memories are so clear and others are total blanks.....wish there were pictures of these things available to view..... fr'instance I can remember that where PC plaza is now was nothing but a big grassy field as a kid........same with where Capital Plaza was..a big field with a huge oak tree and rope swing

A few minor corrections to that. The Big Dom shop was exactly where Gallo's Florists is. Before that it was Dairy Isle . Where Price Chopper plaza is now there was Big N. Where Autozone is was Regular Waddell's car lot (previously Samson's Garage) with the pond next to it and an old antique house. The Bonanza was actually something that occupied the spot where Consumer Optical is, then became LUMS, and now of course the opticians!

Thanks GB......sometime I'll relate the incident that my brother and several of his friends were involved in at Lum's........food fight, plastic ketchup and mustard containers are a couple of the operative phrases for that one...... ...........and once again I wonder if anyone had the foresight to take some photos.........

If memory serves me right -- the K-Mart in Curry Road Plaza was opened as a K-Mart ... when that new name/concept was being introduced nationally.  The name K-Mart started being used in 1962 and eventually replaced the older Kresge line of stores.

I spoke w someone who said that Majestic is correct-  Bonanza was where Price Chopper Plaza is! So maybe Lums was just always Lums. Also the spot that is a bank across from Gallos was Royal fried Chicken (Burger King WAS there for about 30 years after that) and Nifty Donuts was in there btween True Value and The Goblet-across from Gallo where the Miranda Realty and Law Office is was True Value Hardware and Blue Angel (the Goblet) and on the very corner was Joe the Barber in a tiny space,

Bellvue Hardware was the True Value.....they also had a store on B'way.....later moved the Altamont Ave. store to Carman Rd. where Towne TV is now......totally unrelated to this, but giving you an idea of what Rotterdam was like back in the day.

If you're familiar with the Helderberg Ave. bridge you'll know walking along the tracks you could take a shortcut from our neighborhood to the Wedgewood Ave. area by going down to what we called the "hollow" and following the stream which would lead you to the Altamont Ave. area. That stream emptied into Daly's Pond. It also connects with the stream on Westside Ave. and ends up at Cheltingham Ave.

When I was 14 or 15 my next door neighbor gave me 80 or 90 muskrat traps and me and my buddy Fred spent the winter trapping muskrats. We'd set our traps in those streams on Friday's after school and get up real early on the Sat. and Sun. check the "trap-line" and any that we trapped we'd take home and skin, put the pelts on what was called a stretcher and cure 'em. By spring we had quite a few....there was a place in the city near the courthouse that bought and sold furs, so we took our haul down there and ended up getting $40 or $50 each.....I loved growing up here...

This is a most useless conversation in a sense -- you only want to talk about what YOU want to talk about. I prefer talking about times I had with family growing up and the excellent dining experiences with my parents and extended family..... Of course when we went out to eat we all were expected to use our best table manners -- which is a tradition that is sadly lacking today..

Discussion about private life shared with family is wonderful but I have no desire to be a part of your personal life as you have no desire to be part of ours.
Discusions about memories that we share with other ROTTERDAM residents, taking a trip down memory lane, is quite nice.  I don't care to visulaize your table manners at the feeding trough!!!!!!!

With that said, Ron, you are quite adept at not particiapting in a forum discusion if you don't want to, so why did you feel it necessary to post your useless dribble?  If you don't want to be part of this discussion and have nothing of value to add, then move on...IT'S JUST THAT SIMPLE!!!

So as Alias might say, MOVE ON you pus-sucking draft-dodgin' witless cow-like up-chuck-inspiring butt-licking pecker,,,,,,,
