Schenectady has neglected these issues for years. While gangs were taking over neighborhoods and while drugs became the most lucrative business in the county and while attack pit bulls became the pet of choice and while illegal guns were being purchaseddaily.........the cops were busy selling, stealing and using their own drugs and were visiting their girlfriend for hours while on duty and leaving the scene of an accident and beating up their wife/girlfriend.

The problem is the leadership........there is none!

And you don't need a $300K grant from some institution to figure that out.

Fact 1:  you really do not understand how this process works.  it is not like a shopping mall where they offer you a grant for customer service and you tell
them we would would prefer you fund a grant for gang assessment. Syracuse is participating in the same research project Schenectady is.

Fact 2:  SPD has already worked with the Finn Institute in several crime reduction programs.  They were SPD's research partner doing an assessment on
the effectiveness of the public safety street camera project which is expanding all the time.  Additionally, they worked on and are still involved in a project
developing their Compstat program which has been the dominant crime reduction paradigm since the 90s.  So, in addition to your misunderstanding of how this grant project came to be - you also lack an awareness of SPD's crime reduction efforts featuring the Finn  Institute as a reserach partner.

Fact 3:  With respect to addressing the gang situation - a google search will be able to provide you of media articles re: the arrest of 44 Block gang
members whom will all be receiving significant sentences in the federal prison system.  In fact, the paper just had an article about another federal drug
gang roundup -their NYC connection Jamar Green receiving a 20 year sentence.

all of those officers were fired - correct?

Would the arrest of the 4 Block gang be cosndidered a significant effort to reduce violent street gangs, as would the arrest involving Joe Toomer, Jamar
Green?

Well apparently visitor you're either in or associated with the SPD.

You can defend this and other programs (which some may be valuable), but my opinion, they are not significantly helping the police force as a whole - mostly lining file cabinets with bureaucratic BS.

This $340K grant (which is federally paid - that's taxpayers money) is a waste. It's a waste of federal money, it's a grant which should have been DENIED by the department because it does NOTHING of value to the daily running of the police department.

This is government waste, it's money handed out for nonsense paperwork which is crippling the federal government and in my opinion (as someone who looked up the Institute, read about their programs and saw other opportunities) will not help that cop on the street who could use another backup.

By all means, you're no different than many others, someone gives you a grant for $340K - spend it right??? Maybe some thought could go into place like - 'will this really do something of value'? Nah.

public safety street camera project which is expanding all the time

this is so sad....pathetic....sad and pathetic......just dehumanising, de-Americanising, de-liberty, de-living, de-reasoning......I would be hard pressed to cheer that kind of sh!t.....

we invited sh!t to come to Schenectady to live, to take advantage our our 'service' DSS and all, then we take away our liberty of 'air', all in the name of 'do-gooders',,,,yet the leadership do-gooders--LIVE IN GATED COMMUNITIES
of sorts.....what a dirty dirty dirty rotten shame.....as is the HOMELAND security crap and RealID/passport.....

am I the only one who sees this?

so now we can all sit around the F'EN campfire and say...'ATLEAST(here we go with the atleast) we have cameras to protect us and RealID's so we know who the 'F' we are.' what a DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY ROTTEN SHAME......

Hank Williams made the mistake of ONLY comparing Obama to Hitler.......

It is useless because each complaint as see by a civilian/victim..........will generate an opposing view by the police.

Again it will just become a 'he said, she said' argument.

Who will they believe....the victims or the cops? And who will make this decision?
.

Exactly, cops don't like criticism or someone questioning their performance. Cops do deal with the scum of the earth on a daily basis so it's not a surprise they get a mindset that they're always in the right. This is dangerous because any honest suggestion will be met with hostility even if the concern is a real problem. If anybody doesn't believe me next time you see a road check get out of your car and tell the officer he and the others should have more important things to do, tell me how that goes for you.

Sure those cops were fired.....but they were engaging in 'questionable' behavior for years and years and they knew about it and chose to turn a blind eye. And if it wasn't for some residents, or the state police, or a singing criminal.....this would still be going on and just may be for all we know or perhaps not.

Look, I'm not bashing cops here......I saying that if there were strong leadership, these things wouldn't have gone on for as longas they did. AND....yes...the demise of this city has been history in the making for years. With proper leadership, both in the police force and at the government level......things should have never gotten to this point where there are now two hamilton hills, gangs, shootings, pit bull attacks, robberies, drug dealers and prostitution.

Defend it all you want....but the truth is that this $300K survey is nonsense and will clearly not resolve the alarming issues that face the city residents daily. It is just a feel good program that is supported and paid for by who?

As far has how things are working, cameras etc.......just go door to door and ask ALL of the residents of the city. And that won't cost a dime.

No leadership is the issue at hand.

survey should have been done a few years back..now to try and improve is hypocrtical

no crime is  too small     tickets concentrated more on  cell phone/texting  got stopped once for back light out

meanwhile every other car with driver on cell phone....cop watching this doing nothing.

more dangerous than not having proper regis/inspect in my mind (altho not right)

They sent me a survey in the mail after someone broke into my car- I'm not bashing all cops but their priorities seem way off.

how much time should The police spend on finding the person who broke into your car ? everyone looks at priorities differently.  if some one broke into my car I would expect them to stop working on your case and start working on mine

Some folks are holding it against the current commish for things that didn't even occur on his watch.

Let's see, how many were fired after Bennett was brought on board and while the canal man was in office?  I think near 9 were either fired or stepped down.  How many were fired or let go before that?

What is the current number of arrests in murder investigations?

Who wanted to let the public in on the proceedings of the cases of corruption in the department?

As far as cameras go maybe someone here could meet with the commish face to face and ask what the percentage of use the cameras have played in solving a crime? He is available to anyone who wants to meet with him.  Ask him about all the issues, ask him to explain just what the pd is doing to address them.

Ask him what he is doing to root out more bad cops on the force.

Ask him about the study directly face to face

Then come back here to share what you gathered.

Forget the media stories, those companies are only concerned with a profit margin end are not there for our benefit.

Me ducks now.

It's not about time it's about effort, I didn't expect a full blown manhunt but it would have been nice if they at least attempted to lift a print. A car next to mine was also broken into by the same person so that could have been quite a few charges right there, breaking and entering, theft, trespassing, destruction of property and so on. If he was on the computer they could have nailed him but I guess it wasn't worth their time. Since the guy wasn't caught I'm sure he is probably even more confident in his illegal activities, next he will be breaking into houses and then robbing people at gunpoint. This is the 4th time someone broke into our vehicles and all I get is a copy of the police report, no follow up, no investigation.
