Officials: Tax increases likely
Glenville, Schenectady anticipate budget proposals will bring hikes

By PAUL NELSON Staff writer
Published 12:00 a.m., Friday, September 30, 2011

Homeowners in Schenectady and Glenville will likely be shelling out a little more for property taxes next year under proposed municipal budgets set to be unveiled Friday, according to elected officials in those two Schenectady County municipalities.

While Schenectady Councilman Carl Erikson, a member of the city's three-member finance committee, said his goal will be to keep taxes stable, he acknowledged that they will probably be going up slightly.

"I can't imagine there will be a huge tax increase," he said Thursday.

He and the other members of the governing body will get a clearer picture of the budget Friday when Acting Mayor Gary McCarthy, who wants the job permanently, releases the 2012 spending plan. On Thursday, McCarthy would only say in general terms that the budget aims to stabilize city finances.

But that continues to be a Herculean task for municipalities here and elsewhere in the face of dwindling revenue and a sour economy.

In Glenville, Supervisor Christopher Koetzle said a number of factors will make it almost impossible to avoid raising taxes. He cited rising pension costs, health insurance and negotiated salary increases -- totaling $600,000 more in total expenses this year than last -- against the backdrop of dwindling mortgage tax and flat sales tax revenue payments from the county.....................>>>>...............>>>>..................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Officials-Tax-increases-likely-2195827.php#ixzz1ZQiVhqBl

Of course I expect taxes to go up in the City - par for the course (a little golf humor).

I also expected that McCarthy would have little to no comment regarding the budget. That would TOTALLY ruin his election chances. Even when the hand is over, McCarthy refuses to show his cards. That's okay, we know you have nothing new to offer.

How about sell the nursing home which would free up a few million! It will happen 'eventually' when the right folks are elected into office. McCarthy would go down in schenectady's history as being fiscally conservative by doing it now.....IN THE NAME OF LOWERING TAXES FOR THE TAXPAYERS.

What a surprise! On top of the DEM nursing home $12 million Countywide increase except higher City taxes. Albany announced no City tax increase. Let's see what the working together crew cook up with higher trash fees/water fees/building fees as well as the annual property tax wallop. We're number one in taxes and the DEMS must keep it that way.

In REP controlled Saratoga County, the supervisors cut $2.2 million from 2012 department budget requests this week. They were concerned about taxes in a recession. Let me know when this happens with the working together crew here. Another reason to return to a unpaid Board of Supervisors in Schenectady County. A real win-win for the oppressed taxpayers.

So the news says McCarthy proposed 1.9% "tax increase"

Now, tell us, is that the tax LEVY increse or the tax RATE increase or what the typical tax BILL will go up?    Well, dems, come on, answer.

If that is an increase in the tax LEVY, then that will be a much much higher tax BILL for the financially struggling homeonwers, becuse the tax LEVY amount includes all the taxes that the dems have exempted the millioniares from paying.

Wonder if he's going to pay the county and I think isn't it school district for the tax delinquents?

A 1.99% increase in the record DEM tax rate? With fees increase, with a huge County property tax increase because of the unpopular Savage nursing home. The pathetic rubber stamps will add to it "for the unions". The average City property owner will see a major increase in quarterly taxes due. The number one taxed community will remain that way. Working together works! Keep the implosion going!
