Democrats dissed Amedore at 9/11 event The 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack was celebrated by many Capital Region communities. The theme for most was, “We Will Never Forget,” with the purpose of reminding Americans that we must stand together to remain a strong nation.
I had the honor of playing “Taps” at two ceremonies, the first was at the Water’s Edge Lighthouse in Glenville. A large number of police, firefighters and military were joined by a large crowd of people. Chuck Steiner, president of the Schenectady Chamber, was master of ceremonies and was joined by religious leaders and officials who represented Congress, the state Legislature, county Legislature, and town of Glenville. These officials represented different political parties and each spoke briefly about their thoughts of 9/11 and the effects on our country.
At 1 p.m., I attended the event in Princetown, which I assumed would be a similar theme. Several speakers were invited to give speeches and each was very appropriate for the occasion. However, unlike Glenville, which was non-political, Princetown was just the opposite. Angelo Santabarbara, a Democrat running for county Legislature, served as master of ceremonies and provided closing remarks. Tony Jasenski, a running mate, also gave a speech, then presented a proclamation from the county Legislature. Republican Assemblyman George Amedore, our state assemblyman, was invited to attend but was not placed on the agenda. The town supervisor read his name from a list of other VIPs who were there but not asked to speak.
Mr. Amedore was the highest-ranking official and should have been given time to share his thoughts. What promised to be a very nice occasion to unite people suddenly evolved into an embarrassing political event.
