Suicide crisis center closing
State funding will end Dec. 31

SCHENECTADY — A suicide prevention program created after four young girls killed themselves in Schenectady in 2008-09 will end in December because of a lack of funds, despite what program operators say is a continuing need for its services.
Operators of the Hamilton Hill Family Resource Center said the state is ending funding for the program Dec. 31. The state Office of Mental Health, meanwhile, said program operators were told from the beginning that the state was only providing seed money and that operators had to find permanent funding as soon as possible.
The state agency provided a two-year grant to the program, beginning in 2009, with a six-month extension through Dec. 31, 2011. The grant totals approximately $100,000 per year.
The state offered the grant to Schenectady County government and community organizations after four girls committed suicide within four months during the 2008-09 academic year and several others tried to kill themselves.
The grant created the resource center, a drop-in suicide prevention program. The service is housed at the Carver Community Center in the Hamilton Hill neighborhood. Organizers said the location is paramount because it allows them to easily reach adolescents most prone to suicide and their families.

When I read the title of the thread, I thought the city of schenectady was closing down.  People crazy enough to purchase property inside the city limits are committing finacial suicide.

Maybe they need to reach out to some of those who think they're not paying enough taxes and ask if they would like to make a donation to this program.  It sounds as though it would be a very important thing to keep open, if it was only a couple calls every once in a while, or maybe someone else needs to be trained that is already receiving a paycheck somewhere else.

This is the one program DEM morons should be funding -especially after their record tax bills are mailed. Dumping $3 MILLION into the golf course is the big priority with these rubber stamp fossils.
No money for animal control-no money for the schools-no money for at risk youth. Tell us again how yous care alot!

That might cut into their retirement and health benefits?! We're at the point in society when teachers would care more about going to the dentist then they do about saving a child's life. Sad.

I dont expect them to be saviors....but I certainly dont expect them to be taxpayer rapists either.....they even eat their own to fight over what is 'tenurely' their right/winnings/rewards....

The loss of a loved one, work colleague or maybe a school buddy to suicide is something that can be prevented.

Something as simple as waiting the thoughts out for 24 hours may be all it takes.  Giving support to a friend, college or family member sharing those hours may save their life.  

What do you do for them during those 24 hours? What do you say? Who can you go for guidance about the next steps you can take to be there for them?

Most likely if one of them threatened to commit suicide you would not just walk away but what needs to be done after those 24 hours have passed.

what exactly is that.....who deems it such....who's head are these people in?
I'm not saying folks dont feel bad/mad/depressed etc but after millions of years we still dont consider it part of our DNA....I dont get it?....just like the diagnosis of ADHD/ADD.....

sorry just a few questions and it isn't nice when a person choses to 'quit it'....

those girls in Schenectady that commited suicide should have prompted a WHIPLASH response from the community they were raised in and lived in.....ie: a hunt and a public stoning....if the public has to 'wait for the man' to figure things
out all the time then the public become castrated in it's ability to ferret this crap out....

shame on the leaders

the suicide 'prevention' crisis center was just a bandaid and a reminder to the community how there still lurks the bad apples and that they are unable to rid themselves of this without 'the man'....

sometimes a community nees to stop doing as Jesus would do (which is a false feelgood statement for the masses because he said NOT to wait for the Pharisees/Saducees) and find the reason/logic and thereby ridding the wrongs like a cancer
