By increasing the costs of catching and impounding dogs-more animal control officers could be hired. The revolving door of releasing loose dogs to negligent owners has to end. The City Council is considering increasing licensing fees which will only increase the number unlicensed dogs. The Gazetto wants responsible dog owners to buy insurance. Hopefully, someone will not have to die before City Hall finally addresses this problem.

All great common sense ideas.............BUT..............the city officials don't even deal with the 'human animals' that roam the streets selling drugs, sex, pi$$ing on the sidewalks, shooting, robbing etc....what makes us even think they will deal with 'animal animals'?

I have a hunch that a law firm might be able to locate the owner of a building maintaining unsafe conditions faster than the city could.

True, and how many attorneys does the city/county employ already?

So true! The human animals are part of their core constituents. A bunch of idiots that care more about breed discrimination than safe streets.

It is true that the city needs to hire more animal control officers. Yes, it is more hiring, but it is what is needed for public safety. Why should a residentbe subject to dog attack just because she can't afford to live in a better neighborhood? Isn't that what government is for? It has been allowed to become a medieval society over there, and it is spreading outward.
Get rid of one or two high paid political positions and hire for the benefit of the people.

Pit bull attack changes scene on Schenectady street
By Kathleen Moore

Owner says postal carrier shouldn’t be afraid despite being bitten last month

SCHENECTADY — Life has changed on Bluff Avenue in the last three weeks.

Mail carriers have banned the entire street since two pit bull dogs broke loose, knocked down a carrier and bit her.

The owner, Amanda Radley, can’t understand why it happened. She says the carrier shouldn’t be afraid to come back.

But just across the street, Robert Peek has told his 5-year-old twins that they can’t ride their bikes up their dead-end road any more, for fear the pit bulls might attack again. What scared him was that it appeared to be unprovoked: The mail carrier wasn’t even in front of the dogs’ home; she had her back turned, delivering mail to a house about 20 feet away.

On both sides of the road, dogs occasionally run loose. The main difference: Peek’s pit bull obeys commands, coming back to sit and stay when ordered.

Radley’s pit bulls play a boisterous game of keep-away, dodging their owners and ignoring shouted commands as they run down the street and into neighbors’ yards.

All of the dogs are popular with the dozen young children on the street, who play with them every afternoon.

Radley lets children walk one of her dogs — even children whose names she doesn’t know. The other dog, though, stays on a short leash, where it cries and strains to get free. That’s the dog that bit the mail carrier.

Peek’s dogs go off-leash sometimes too, playing in their driveway. But when the dogs ignore the rules and race into the street, Peek calls them back sharply — and they obey.

While Radley can’t understand how her dogs could have attacked anyone, Peek has a simple answer. He thinks they’re bad dog trainers.

“They’re young people, in their 20s,” he said. “After [the attack] they’re still letting them run loose. It’s not the dog’s fault. It’s the way they raise them.”.......................>>>>.......................>>>>..............http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/sep/17/0917_pit/?mobile

Sorry senders, I would shoot the owners first. They would just get other dogs, wouldn't they?

I agree. If these are all rental properties, perhaps the landlords can refuse tenants with animals while the elected officials can lower the welfare benefits.

With the high property taxes and vacancy rates in Schenectady, I'm sure landlords are at the mercy of a tenant that pays the rent.  What's the other option, evict the tenant and pay the $6000 taxes?  That's why people are walking away from their properties, it isn't worth the time and effort.  Might as well get a part time job at Mickey D's.

Why would somebody want all those headaches managing property that is devaluing?

I believe the landlords never come around to notice what the tenants are up to. Slob tenants are a dime a dozen, look at all the welfare hotels in Colonie. Make the landlords responsible and you would see way fewer dog attacks, IMO.

of course pit bull attacks are the fault of Dems... they created the breed, I understand, and they let them loose onto the streets searching for slim like B. slimey.

I love a good joke, that is why I come here.

If the gazette did some investigative reporting they would know and would have reported that it is in fact....and I'm sure everyone would agree....that it is in part the fault of the party in charge (dems) that have lowered the bar for schenectady while raising the taxes on the few working folks. Schenectady has a welfare program to die for. Schenectady is known state wide for their lucrative welfare benefits. They flock here for the welfare...not for proctors.

Just ask the 'citizen journalists'.......they'll tell you. They are not employed by a media outlet....so citizen journalists are beholden to no one. That should make any paid media journalist green with envy...yes?
