Three bolts of lightning strike Schenectady sites Updated 09:44 p.m., Thursday, August 25, 2011
SCHENECTADY -- Lightning struck at least three times Thursday afternoon in Schenectady.
Firefighters went to Emmanuel-Friedens Church on Nott Terrace to make sure the building had not sustained a damaging direct hit from a reported lightning strike. No one was injured.
Another bolt at 3:10 p.m. hit a transformer on Summit Street. About 1,200 residents may have experienced a 15-second loss of electricity, but power was immediately restored, according to National Grid.
Another strike was reported on Germania Avenue around 3:50 p.m. About 850 homes lost power because of the strike, according to National Grid. It was estimated that power would be restored to those households by evening.
The third strike is the one that affected us. It started raining and then this HUGE boom, son said power out same time lightning flashed. Power was out app. three hours.
