When a police officer is faced with a gun there is no way to know if it's loaded or empty and they must assume that it's loaded and take the appropiate action in a split second so why do we need to know the guns condition. |

After the shooting a relative of the deceased stated on the news that the gun was not loaded or operative (lacked a spring). Has this been confirmed? From instances in the past I recall that when a like situation such as this occured, it was reported fairly soon, to justify the officers shooting, that the perpetrators gun was loaded/operative. This quelled/defused much of the suspicion of lack of justification on the officers part. It's curious that at least this piece of fact has not yet been released. Surely this much is fact-whether the gun was loaded/operative or not. What would be the purpose of witholding this fact?

NAACP to seek police shooting details

SCHENECTADY — Officials with the local NAACP are set to call today for better training of officers in response to the Aug. 12 police shooting of a man armed with a gun.
The NAACP of Schenectady County has called a press conference for late this afternoon to question the number of shots fired in the case — 14 — and call for more information.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the group pressed for release of the autopsy report, the crime scene video and details on the department’s policies and procedures on handling such a threat. The group also noted comments from police officials that the shooting appeared to be within police policy.
All the same time, the chapter argued that 14 shots at mid-afternoon in a residential area was excessive and placed neighborhood residents and passers-by in danger. Police officials have said shooting on a busy street was dangerous, but allowing a man with a gun to shoot would have been even worse.
