I have received word that Mike Kirvin passed away suddenly. I considered him a friend and a gentleman. My condolences to his family go out with all of my sympathy. Rest on peace, Michael.

Sad to hear this. I knew Mike and his family growing up when our families socialized a bit. Many years later a friend and I drove through a blizzard to spend a weekend with him and another pal in Buffalo. Anytime we would bump into each other in town he'd always take the time to chat for awhile. RIP Mike.
ROTTERDAM — It is with great sorrow that the Kirvin family announces the passing of Michael Kevin Kirvin, who was stricken at his home on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011. He was 61.
The son of Jean E. Kirvin and the late John F. Kirvin, Michael grew up in Rotterdam and attended Mohonasen High School. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in history from SUNY Buffalo, where he met his beloved wife, Mary Palazzo, in 1970. They married a year later in Endicott, N.Y. Michael joined the Rotterdam Police Department in 1972 and retired with the rank of lieutenant in 2000. After his retirement, he served on the Schenectady County Board as a democratic legislator.
Michael's friends and family will remember his broad cultural knowledge and enjoyment of road trips to baseball fields, NASCAR races and concerts. His talent for storytelling and the ease with which he conversed with others were two of his most endearing traits. In the summer and fall, you could often find him in the tranquil beauty of Brant Lake in the Adirondack Mountains. Michael's uncommon generosity of spirit affected all who knew him.
He is survived by his mother, Jean E. Kirvin of Fort Edward; his wife, Mary Kirvin; his cherished daughters, Tristan Hope and Kyle Marie, and his future son-in-law, Patrick Varian; his sister, Anne Kirvin Scheffler, and brother-in-law, Robert of South Glens Falls, and his sister, Kathleen Kirvin Brennan, brother-in-law, Thomas, and nephews, Thomas John and John Patrick Brennan of Ridgefield, Conn.; his aunt and uncle, William and Bonnie Kirvin of Clifton Park. He is also survived by several cousins. Michael was fortunate to have had many lifelong friends.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Aug. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gabriel's Church, 3040 Hamburg St., Rotterdam. Burial will follow in St. Cyril Cemetery.
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers contributions in Michael's memory be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, N.Y. 12308 or the Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady County, 53 Maple Ave., Scotia, N.Y. 12302.
This is very sad...Mike was a good man...smart...and always a gentleman. I remember when his wife Mary was pregnant with his daughter Tristan while I was in her 10th grade history class and he would stop in frequently to check on her...a dedicated husband and father.
