Gov't advisers: No copays for contraceptives

WASHINGTON -- Millions of women stand to gain free access to a broad menu of birth control methods, thanks to a recommendation issued Tuesday by health experts advising the government.

An Institute of Medicine panel recommended that the government require health insurance companies to cover birth control for women as preventive care, without copayments. Contraception - along with such care as diabetes tests during pregnancy and screening for the virus that causes cervical cancer - was one of eight recommended preventive services for women.

"Unintended pregnancies carry health consequences for the mother - psychological, emotional and physical - and also consequences for the newborn," said Dr. Linda Rosenstock, panel chairwoman and dean of public health at the University of California, Los Angeles. "The overwhelming evidence was strongly supportive of the health benefit" of contraception.

A half century after the introduction of the birth control pill, the panel's recommendations may help to usher in another revolution. Medical experts say easier access could start a shift to more reliable forms of long-acting birth control, such as implants or IUDs, which are gaining acceptance in other economically developed countries. Emergency contraception, known as the morning-after pill, would also be covered.

All but one member of the 16-person IOM panel supported the final recommendations.

President Barack Obama's health care law already requires most health plans to provide standard preventive care for people of both sexes at no additional charge to patients. Women's health recommendations were considered new and politically sensitive territory, so the nonpartisan institute was asked to examine the issue.

Nonetheless, a fight over social mores is brewing. Catholic bishops and other religious and social conservatives say pregnancy is a healthy condition and the government should not require insurance coverage of drugs and other methods that prevent it. (Most health plans already cover contraception.).........................>>>>......................>>>>....................Read more: http://www.sacbee.com/2011/07/19/3779515/govt-advisers-cover-birth-control.html#ixzz1Tarzz4U9

...make everything free. There isn't anything that doesn't "help women" or "help the children." And if you against you are "misogynistic" and "anti-women." Just ask the women.

I personally cant have any more kids.  For me to get pregnant would surely lead to death.  I also cannot use the pill due to hormones that can raise my blood pressure.  Im at the deciding line right now to just get "fixed".

For young girls we can't be ridiculous and tell them "Don't spread 'em." THAT is offensive. Instead we say "We know it feels good so do it." Very enlightened.

True, but saying "no" breaks the #1 tenet of liberalism so it must not be spoken.

I think that the blame needs to be placed on the man's head for most of these unwanted pregnancies since men have the power in our society and women often are the victims yet I get the drift that the men here think this is squarely on the heads of the women which is unfortunate.

Gertie,
I put the blame on both partners.  If the woman consented to sex then she deserves half the blame/credit.

Humans are biologically designed to get pregnant to insure continuation of the species.  All women should have access to affordable birth control.  All attempts to legislate morality by making abortion or birth control services difficult to obtain have failed miserably.  It's time that Conservatives step out of their caves and join the modern world.
Just think how much better the world would be if every child born was wanted, not an oops or a mistake or that their only reason for being alive was that birth control was unavailable.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

This is one of the reasons I am a man without a political party. I am a fiscal conservative, I am interested in the bottom line. Paying for birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancies pales in comparison to the cost of another child for federal, state, and local governments... and it's not even close.

I don't think assessing gender blame is even the issue.  Everybody knows it takes two to tango.  But legally, women have 100% of the responsibility in a consenting pregnancy.  They are legally the sole decision maker of whether to birth or terminate.

As a side note - In recent weeks, the rhetoric was ramped up by politicians during the debt ceiling debate, telling us our social safety nets (Social Security, Medicare) are in jeopardy of going broke.  Now, any fair minded person understands that our social safety nets are funded by taxing the working age generation to pay for the retired generation.  Does it make any sense to anybody, to continue promoting these social engineering policies by subsidizing birth control which will ultimately reduce America's birth rate?  China and India are emerging as the world economic leaders.  Much of that is due to the size of their populations.  I am not suggesting these countries are perfect models, but it should at the least make us question the success of the last 50 years of Western civilizations birth control policies as China moves into the position of the worlds economic superpower.

As our birth rates decline, the tax burden on the next generation will increase, and we will continue to decline in economic status and depend more and more on the generosity of China to buy our debt to pay for all our spending that our elected officials knew was unsustainable.

When the following generation is smaller than the previous, we will instead burden the federal, state, and local governments with our elderly.

When every generation increases the overall population, at some point the system will be unsustainable.  Food, water, housing and natural resources become so scarce that the system collapses.

Thank you, Malthus.
