One thing I'm not clear on - would this guy have reason to think his diploma was not good enough, or was he another victim of one of the educational scams that have been in the news a lot recently? I believe there's been a crackdown lately on some of these schools.

are you kidding me- this cop is a sneaky little sh!t- he knew his diploma came out of a Cracker Jack box. - a good wack on the side of the head should be sufficient

Why didn't the DEMS at Civil Service know that? His transcript was mandated to be part of his application. The all DEM Civil Service workers had a copy of it and still allowed him to take the exam-which he aced. Hilarious how you blame the veteran not the morons at Civil Service. Stuck on stupid.

If he was from a Cracker Jack college, then he should have been flagged and prohibited from taking the police exam. The county workers failed to proper vet the veteran. Someone at County Civil Service needs to be fired for incompetence. This veteran has an excellent case against the County and should pursue all legal options.

Gazette, city treated
police recruit unfairly

Re July 20 article, “Police recruit ousted in 1 day”: Actions by both the city and The Daily Gazette regarding the firing of John Laviano from the police department are reprehensible.
He made a mistake. He should have picked an accredited college. Acting Mayor Gary McCarthy confi rmed there was no misconduct.
Excelsior College here in Albany, accredited and highly rated, offers both credit for military training and portfoliobased assessment (life experience credit). A decorated combat vet just might get 30 credits toward a criminal justice degree. The Gazette write-up makes this whole idea seem bogus. It is not.
Both the Gazette (front-page story on fi ring) and the city (public firing after the family attended ceremony) set out to judge this young man. You might as well have set out to publicly electrocute this war hero on the Fourth of July. How many of you are even veterans or combat veterans? You probably have no idea what you asked of him in Afghanistan. And now look what you have gone and done.
Let’s make this right. Write an editorial asking for the reinstatement of “Officer” Laviano in the next Zone 5 Law Enforcement Academy class. Maybe a local veterans organization can help him get 30 credits at a proper online university.
This incident has diminished everyone. It must not stand.

He needs to be immediately reinstated with back pay and a public apology issued by the DEM morons ruining County Civil Service. How's the investigation into County Civil Service going? ROTFLMAO!!

Of course the village idiot wants to whack this guy but give his DEM lob overseers another pass. Like to see some of these fat, lazy, loud mouths, who couldn't make it one day in Basic Training serve in Afghanistan or the North Pole. Post and write editorials from your duty stations. Working together works! Working together works! The entire County DEM administration needs to be flushed. Start flushing in November.

Military service should be worth at least an AA if not a 4 year degree- a REAL degree- one that you can use to actually get into law school nota FAKE school like Ashwood College- wake up salami- pull your head out of the political bucket of puke you wake up in every day

Now you say military experience is equal to a 4 year degree? Which is it moron? Try spelling whack correctly before attacking a military hero. Or posting any of your usual insane ramblings. The veteran applied in good faith. The DEM morons running Civil Service had a copy transcript AND APPROVED HIM for the exam. End of story. Stop blaming the veteran for the incompetent DEM morons running County Civil Service.

I believe the usual procedure when taking civil service exams is to submit required paperwork and let the testing body rule on eligibility, which is what this guy did. He didn't deserve public humiliation.

As much as I want to agree with this man, all someone has to do is google Ashwood University and in Wikipedia is CLEARLY states that this is a mill which actually operates out of Pakistan. For $345 one receives a diploma, letters of recommendation ..all in 15 days. No test, no books, no classes!?!

Now, the second question is why ANY Civil Service worker wouldn't at least check on this prior to having this man enter the force.

It's something that should never had gone this far.

Okay, so the guy should've expected to be turned down? This is actually more confusing now. Why pay for a diploma you know will be flagged as fake, unless you somehow know ahead of time that no one is looking?
I think perhaps civil service has been so watered down by politicians using it to rubber-stamp their hand-picked choices, that there isn't anyone left who actually knows the rules.
Don't anyone hold your breath waiting for an investigation into civil service practices.

Bingo! County Civil service fumbled the ball. If it was not accredited-then deny him admittance to the exam. Simple answer. The DEMS were negligent, they were too stunad to check anything and then after the veteran aces the exam and is sworn in they wake up.

It's another example of DEMS working together. Here's the funniest part the DEMS announced in the Gazetto they are investigating idiots at Civil Service! Veterans group and the outraged public are not going to fall for the usual DEM rope a dope. Take one for the working together team.
