Authorities say degree he received was from unaccredited college

Published 12:02 a.m., Wednesday, July 20, 2011

SCHENECTADY -- Less than 24 hours after being sworn in as new police recruit, John Laviano was fired Tuesday because the online college where he apparently received credit for life experiences is not accredited.

"It caught everyone by surprise," Police Chief Mark Chaires said Tuesday when asked about the embarrassing episode, which apparently came to light after a local media outlet raised questions about Ashwood University, the college where Laviano majored in criminal justice after graduating in 2010 from Guilderland High School.

"This was just an honest mistake," Chaires said....................>>>>..............>>>>................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/loca.....27.php#ixzz1SdxCqsuI

It's pretty bad when a veteran police force needs a media outlet to show them what is legal and what is illegal!!

Another great job by the working together DEM morons! Crack all DEM staff at County civil service didn't see anything wrong with a one year degree. Another black eye for the worst run County in Upstate NY. Bronx-North.

Schenectady County to small for a County. Too big for an insane asylum. Can't wait to hear Judy DAG on this fiasco. The Gazetto has to tell County civil service that the college is a diploma mill?lol

Lady Gaga won't have anything to say other than "working together and reaching out." Or some other canned BS line that won't say anything. Maybe she will say she will get "Rotterdam moving forward."

Now the only right thing to do is to run 'extensive' back ground checks on ALL of those presently serving on the SPD!! Have the media outlets do it for them.

I think this is all a shame.  This man served our country and was prepared to serve us, protecting us from the cesspool that much of the city has become.

And because of an HR issue, that should have been addressed before he went through training, he loses his job on his first day.

...and gets a boatload of public humiliation as a "thank you" for his decorated service because of the stupid hacks that run our government. It sucks.

The kid's denied a job on the police force that promoted Greg Kaczmarek to chief.  If I were this kid, I wouldn't be too upset.  It's good to find out the incompetence of your bosses as early as possible.  They did him a favor.

Mistakes happen ..

When London established its modern police department in 1839,  one of the first officers hired lasted about 5 hours on the job ... he got drunk during his lunch break .. and was fired.

As for this case - since we only know what is printed in the paper (and that is not the whole story) - it is hard to cast judgement on either the recruit or the police department.

I wish all the remaining new recruits all of the best -- as they embark on a very challenging career.
