SCHENECTADY -- Firefighters are still on the scene of a fire at 1671 Crane St. near the Schenectady-Rotterdam town line. The call came in around 11:30 Saturday night for the fully involved blaze at the large, multi-level building. Officials say the bulk of the fire has been knocked down, however, there are still hotspots. There is also a lot of smoke in the area. Officials are asking that people avoid the area if possible. There have been no reported injuries.

I looked all over for a photo but none of the news sources seem to have one. Last night I smelled smoke and I was mentally cussing out the individual somewhere in my neighborhood who has frequent outdoor fires resulting in acrid smelly air entering my home, but then I heard the sirens and the smoky smell was even stronger than usual so I realized there had to be a big fire somewhere. I wonder what caused it?
Schenectady fire tears through flea market Published 11:31 p.m., Sunday, July 17, 2011
SCHENECTADY -- Firefighters spent hours Sunday extinguishing hot spots after a fire destroyed a flea market and apartment building on Crane Street Saturday night.
The building at 1671 Crane St. was fully involved when fire departments arrived around 11:25 p.m. Saturday. An addition on the back of the building collapsed, and the main building's roof suffered a partial collapse.
Schenectady deputy fire chief Scott Doherty said firefighters remained on scene until late Sunday extinguishing fires that still existed under the debris.....................>>>>....................>>>>.................Read more: http://www.timesunion.com/loca.....99.php#ixzz1SRpu5NVX

Heard this place was broken into about a week ago. (the flea market)

I looked at the YNN footage. I went by there this evening to see the extent of the damage and they had the site set up as a crime scene, with a cop car stationed at the entrance and that big mobile crime scene RV or whatever it is. This is standard procedure for a fire of unknown origin, if you don't know whether there was arson committed you have to treat it as such. The thing that bothers me is that I don't recall seeing anything like that at the McClellan/Eastern fatal fire, and that was near where I live so I think I would have seen it. Did anyone else notice anything like that at the time? I still don't know why they destroyed the whole site on New Year's Eve. A suspicious fire with a fatality is a homicide. If they didn't realize there was a body in the building, how hard did they investigate the cause of the fire? This is really disturbing to me because these things are not supposed to be subject to some individuals whim, how they get handled, but are a matter of law. Where is the city line near this recent fire?
Don't know where the city line is, but the property is mostly in rotterdam and part in the city. And the schenectady part isvery high taxed. I don't believe that any buildings are on the schenectady side. I drove by this morning and yes it does look like a crime scene. I'd have to guess that there are still some valuables in the flea market part. I'd think that until the insurance companies inspect the inventory and the investigation is done, it will be blocked off.

Apparently it is believed to be arson. Christy works with someone who is a fan of auto racing and some drivers have cars there and supposedly a couple drivers aren't even able to go to the garages in the back for their cars to work on them to get them ready for this weekend. I don't know, This is heresay, but with the crime in the city, I wouldn't be surprised
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
I figure when the arsonists burn down a few thousand more delapidated shanties, then the place might start to look better. Who cares about this crappy place anyway?

Arson is crime, we don't want crime increasing any more than the horrible level we have now. Also I believe it gives people in the affected areas additional costs as far as insurance premiums and trouble getting loans, etc. It expands the blight, is what I'm trying to say. That was crappy looking over there, I agree, but arson doesn't seem to be the right way to improve an area, even though the idea of burning some places has a certain emotional appeal. Our elected officials have been quite busy fiddling around (with their hobbies, like Metroplex) instead of doing their jobs, while Schenectady figuratively burns to the ground, for quite some time.
