Ex-DSS building to become apartments
SCHENECTADY — The Nott Street building that once housed the Schenectady County Department of Social Services has been saved from the wrecking ball.
Instead, the Galesi Group will convert the former school, which dates to 1875, into corporate-style apartments.
Galesi will lease the building from the Schenectady County Industrial Development Agency for $200,000 with an option to purchase. Schenectady County sold the building to the county IDA. The county announced the sale Thursday.
The county relocated DSS operations from 487 Nott St. and Schaffer Heights on Nott Terrace to the former Schenectady International building at 797 Broadway, which Galesi owns. The county is renting the 47,000-square-foot building for about $16 million over 20 years, a cost of $16.99 per square foot. It has an option to buy the building after 10 years. The Broadway site also includes offices for the Youth Bureau, Veterans Services and the Schenectady Job Training Agency.
After the county left the Nott Street site, the plan was to demolish the building. Galesi proposed building a medical center there at one point. In addition to redeveloping the building, Galesi has applied to the federal government to list the property on the National Register of Historic Places.
Galesi developed the nearby Golub Corporate Headquarters and is currently redeveloping the former Alco site in Schenectady. The company is headquartered in Rotterdam.

The Gazette just did 2 articles the past two Monday's about Schenectady neighborhoods and residential property vacancies.  Now the city is developing MORE "corporate-style" apartments?  WTF does "corporate style" mean?  City housing prices are tumbling and the city is putting more residential inventory on the market?  The article says Galesi will lease the building for $200K - is that per year, for 5 years, for 10 years?  I haven't checked, but is that building on the property tax roll?

Another make work project give-a-way to give the appearance of economic activity.

The former DSS building, down the block from ALCO condos?

Let's just face the facts, Metroplex can't get ANY NEW BUSINESSES to move into Schenectady. They just keep giving away the buildings to connected developers who get grants for sales-tax-free building materials and don't have to pay school or property taxes because they are 'leasing' the building from the IDA.

These back door deals are all happening before the November election...I'm sure we'll see plenty more in the next few months. They better get the government cheese before all the rats are lead out of town!

They are getting in on the free government money while there is still a city. Unfortunately I believe Roger Hull is fine with this type of thing as well, s
the taxpayer is squeezed between the poverty industry and the corporate giveaways. At least they decided not to destroy some historic architecture in favor of shiny new as done elsewhere. Shiny new gets old fast.

Who the hell are these dems that come up with this stuff.

Peoople are fleeing the city in droves.   There is way more vacant housing than the city can handle.  The they are choosing to jack up the taxes on the financially struggling opmeowners to build more housing?

Who the hell is going to live in these apartments?

The way things are looking in the city, I would guess they would be getting state funding a la Section 8 housing.

Good use for the old building --- the "College Park" area of the city is really progressing quite well -- Schenectady's Renaissance continues.

Except that you need to drive through there in an armored and tracked troop carrier or an M1 Abrams tank, since a regular motor vehicle will suffer from a busted axle attempting to get to Union College.

The "College Park" area is where the illegal Puerto Rican Day parade took place right in front of Schenectady's Finest..
I don't think a random, gullible visitor on a drive-by can really assess what it is like for those who actually live here. Especially one so easily impressed by the self-important.

Rome also burned to the ground in 64 AD. It's taken the Plex and County Leg close to two decades, but with the same destructive results.

The City does NOT need more housing, it needs to get the empty homes filled and bring the tax base back up. This project is totally void of any property and school taxes as the IDA is simply leasing the building.

Another raw deal for every City taxpayer where every County penny is being wasted.

The Democrats have only had a majority on the County Legislature for 8 years --- and in those 8 years there has been significant improvements in the city and the county as a whole.

Also -- this is not a normal housing project --- it is for "corporate apartments' -- that is for businesspersons who would be staying for extended periods.

You folks really need to educate yourself .. oh and get a grip on reality.

"We have only controlled things in total for 8 years. With only 8 years of misery under our belt, we need more time to screw you completely so vote us another term."

THAT is a great campaign strategy. If they control it for 8- years they will always have a scapegoat, and will never take ownership of their rotten behaviors and criminal doings. They will always point the finger elsewhere...

Questions............
How much did schenectady county sell the building for to the county ida?
How long is Galesi's lease before purchase?
Why didn't Galesi buy the building 'outright'??
Will the plex end up giving Galesi grants/loans (taxpayer money) to upgrade etc....?
Sound like another taxpayer scam????
