Those were the days when the tri-city area was booming with activity and places to go. Every Thursday night we would drive between Albany and Schenectady and occasionally there would be a little drag racing between the stop lights.Thursdays downtown Schenectady was so crowded with people you could hardly walk on the sidewalks.

Drag racing was common place by the Neba on upper State Street. And it was downtown every Thursday night. We walked downtown like today's kids walk the malls.
Swimming Pool Casino, Aerodrome, Swiss Inn, College Inn,the Castle Club, Jamaica Inn.....WOW!
I haven't heard those names or even thought of those places in so long... It hurts my brain just trying to remember that far back.

I remember seeing all the cars over there when I was a kid near Neba and the old pet store. Most of the racing when I started driving was up near the car wash on Central Ave.

Shirley or Cha Cha was a female racer in Schenectady, they made a movie about her later on, I believe she had a corvette though. I remember hearing about a bumper sticker she had, it said "if you can beat me you can eat me"

the 'good old days" were great and filled with many memories ... but life goes on .. and there is still a lot of fun to be had an a lot of great places to make great memories at here today
As for the memories -- I remember when Wolf Road was lined with farms except for the newly built Colonie Center ... the site where Mohawk Mall was built was either a farm or a golf course ... I remember that my grandfather and grandmother loaded the back seat of their Plymouth Fury with about 6 or 8 grandkids and took us to see the new mall in Colonie. My grandfather and grandmother were dressed in their Sunday best .. it was a huge occasion.
At about that same time -- the stretch of Northway between Albany and Lake George opened -- and my grandparents loaded up the grand children and drove us up to Lake George --- my grandfather loved new highways - new buildings --- and interesting out of the way places ... like a fish hatchery miles down an unpaved road (can't recall where that was) that he took us grandkids to on a day trip
and the site of the Clifton Country Mall -- was a pine barren --- that I do remember very distinctly -- when my parents first moved us back to New York from out of state.
Businesses that I miss -- the Red Barn on State Street ... Vallee's Steak House (now Bryant & Stratton on Central Avenue) ..and Howard Johnson's Restaurant. Growing up, we hardly ever went to McDonald's or Burger King (which used to be Carrol's) --- my parents took us 7 kids to Red Barn because it served fish, hamburgers and chicken .... while BK and McD's only had burgers .. at least at Red Barn everyone could find something they liked to eat. Of course, a visit to a restaurant (fast food or otherwise) was only for a special occasion -- birthday, good report card(s), etc
Good report cards .. reminds me of Hoffman's Playland ... kids got a free ride for every A on their report card. That was a blast.

Shirley (aka ChaCha) did street race in Schdy and drove a vette...but by late 60's/early 70's she was doing her racing at Englishtown NJ, where she became well know and respected for her driving, then onto the national circuit.....bumper sticker....YUP, you got it!
