I am extremely distressed at what the Republican-dominated Congress is doing to the benefits of children, the poor and the elderly. To propose that millionaires and billionaires be allowed to keep most of their immense wealth, and not be taxed at a fair rate so they give back to the nation which allowed them to amass their fortunes, is preposterous. Programs such as public assistance, Social Security, Food Stamps, Medicaid and EPIC provide a vital lifeline for those least able to provide for themselves. If a nation is truly judged by how it cares for its most vulnerable members, we should be ashamed at the current state of affairs. Elderly people should not have to choose between purchasing food and the medications necessary to sustain life and health. And children should not be going hungry in this rich, powerful country. Perhaps the Republicans of Congress should be thought of as the real “death panels,” deciding who lives and who dies. I admit I am indeed a very liberal Democrat, but mostly I am a caring individual.
