Americans foggy on history of July 4th Published: Friday, July 01, 2011 By Dave Canfield The Record
Many Americans are foggy on the specifics of the holiday they celebrate this weekend, according to a recent Marist College poll.
Fewer than six in 10 Americans could cite 1776 as the year the colonies declared their independence from Great Britain, according to the poll. Fifty-eight percent of respondents knew the correct year, while 26 percent were unsure and 16 percent gave another year, according to the results.
Nor were respondents sure about which nation the colonists sought to sever themselves from by crafting the Declaration of Independence. About one in five - 19 percent - was unsure, and 5 percent named a county besides Great Britain.
Men outscored women by more than 10 percentage points on each question - by 13 percentage points on the year and 15 percentage points on the nation, according to the poll.
On both questions, the Northeast and Western U.S. scored best.
Young Americans were the least likely to cite 1776 as the correct year. Just 31 percent of those ages 18 to 29 got it right, according to the poll. Meanwhile, 75 percent of those ages 45 to 59 knew the answer.
The poll surveyed 1,003 adults nationwide had has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
Too many of their teachers went to the "Sara Palin/Michelle Bachmann School of American History"!

Maybe it's because we have some horrible teachers that aren't doing a good job teaching their students because they are tenured and don't really give a crap because they're going to get paid anyway.
Happy Independence Day Weekend. We are so free and independent, you can't buy a ladyfinger firecracker without a permit. Again...Have A SAFE And Happy Independence Day!!!

I know someone ( that lives in Phoenix AZ ) that can get 4 live hand grenades for a hundred bucks without a permit.
Maybe the government should mandate the manufacturers of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to label their products with graphic pictures of what could happen if you use these products. You know, like they're doing with Tobacco. Firecracker manufacturers could have pictures of people with missing fingers.
God forbid you show somebody actually enjoying themselves when using these products.

If you want to watch a smoker "enjoy themselves"... Watch what happens when they are out of cigs... Addiction is anything but enjoyable!

So are you now for legislating morality and "sin" taxes?
No Cicero... I don't care if smokers kill themselves, I just don't want to pay for their addiction. They can sin all they want... but the rest of us should be protected from their addiction. Cigarette smoke is a Class A Carcinogen. Treat cigarettes the same way that the state treats all other Class A Carcinogens.
Smokers in NY State cost the state more in added health costs, than they add to the state in NY Cigarette taxes.

Obesity is next. Everybody's lifestyle will get a cost analysis. That's what happens when you have social programs and socialism. Morality is legislated based on the controlling parties guidelines. Alcohol does far more damage to the individual and a society than smoking, but every beer commercial you watch promises fun and beautiful women if you buy their product. I guess the taxes collected on alcohol outweigh the health cost on society.
Every lifestyle choice and be analyzed to measure the cost on society. Karl Marx understood that the individuals choice is not greater than the good of the State.

Cicero jumps from the 4th of July, to socialism, to morality, to alcohol, to beer commercials, then ties it up all nicely with Karl Marx.
Cigarettes are the only one of his list that USED AS INTENDED will kill you, and those around you.

Whats wrong with that ?
One of the positive effects of smoking Is early death- many studies show that there is health care cost savings due to early death and there is a Pension and social security expense savings if your dead and you also save on housing for elderly-
