Divorce is much Much  more complicated than marriage -

You got that right.. it keeps many attorneys employed.

How are "common law" marriages handled?  There is no state license in that case.

$hit, Judge Judy settles differences between two people everyday at 4pm.  I'm sure our justice system already knows how to handle an unlicensed partnership.

the crazy thing is that this " pastor " is a spiritual leader for some people attending church.  If this guy is speaking to Christians they must all be reading their bibles right ?  then why is no one saying ' reverend' please explain Romans 13- 1-7 .

Why did St. Paul have to squeeze in these few paragraphs that about obeying the ' laws of the land '.  Because it really screws things up when Christians and pagans both  try and figure a way around it.

And so are children born out of wedlock in combination with an estrangement of so called unmarried parents.

I don't think it's the states role to determine how a religion and individual parishioners interpret their holy book.  This has little to do with religious doctrine and more to do with state laws.  I don't care if pagans don't want a state marriage license, it doesn't matter who or what they believe.  Why is it the states business?  Like the article says, if the state has the power to license, they have the power to prohibit.

Wha ?  You are making this confusing - Are you a Christian ?  Do you read the bible ? if not read out Romans 13- 1-7  If you are a Christian these are the guidelines for following the law- state,fed,municipal- quit being so squirly about it.

exactly It is the Christians role to apply Gods Word to the law-

Follow the bible:
(Matthew 22:21).
“Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s,
and unto God the things that are God’s,
and the IRS gets the rest!"

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

I'm not being squirrely, you're arguing that because the Christian Holy Book makes a statement referring to following mans laws, the state has the right to make ANY law and a Christian MUST obey.  That is fallacious and you know it.  You just think it's clever.  The state shouldn't have the authority to license or prohibit any relationship regardless if you're Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Atheist.

I'm not arguing anything- anyone that has been to bible study or read any commentary knows that Romans 13-1-7 is the example and guide  of how Christians are to obey mans laws.
Attaching some conservative ideology to true  CHRISTIAN is wrong. You have a bad habit of doing this. .ost conservatives do this- it makes them feel more holy than liberals

So your bible study classes lead you to believe that Paul(author of Romans) was imprisoned and said to be beheaded by Caesar after writing a letter to Rome preaching obedience to the Roman government?  And then Jesus was brought to Pilate to be crucified on charges of "perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King" (Luke 23:2).

Seems to me that Christians that obey ALL of mans law sometimes meet horrible death at the hands of the Government.

Nice - I see you at least opened  up your bible  -

but I wouldn't wrestle with the text too much - its still pretty clear- obey the law of the land- but why do you want to argue about everything ? I never said I was in favor of the stupid law.

My car has a license... NO F'n Way!
If the sate has the power to license cars... they have the power to prohibit cars!

WOW!  This is cool.  IT's almost like the Righties are creating all this fuss to keep a few extra dollar$ in their pocket!

There goes Box again...Comparing a relationship between two human being to animals and automobiles.  Priceless!

Again, I must ask Box...How do you come up with the conclusion that it's about money?  New York just passed a law that had to override a law that was on the books for 100 years PROHIBITING GAY MARRIAGE!!!  He, dumb-a**, do you get it?  If States did not license marriage, the gay marriage issue would not be an issue.  We just created another prohibitive license to override the previous prohibitive license.  A statists answer to bad laws are more laws.

Because too many people shy away from opposing points of view.  America used to be about debate and the exchange of ideas - and yes, that means ARGUMENTS(not in the hollering sense).  I enjoy when my ideas are challenged, and I enjoy challenging others ideas.

People that run from arguments fear they may begin questioning their own beliefs and ideals.IMO

Cicero would keep a law (like slavery, or preventing women the right to vote) just because it's on the books for over 100 years...
Um Cic... what about F R E E D O M!

Gays can marry in NY.  In many southern states, it was illegal (for over 100 years)for a white to marry a black.  Again... it's about F R E E D O M!

Cicero can pretend his opposition is about some state power struggle... I can only guess at his motives... but the Gay Marrage law concerns what Cicero fears most... F R E E D O M for ALL AMERICANS!
