The tire swing had to come down at St. John the Evangelist School. The recess favorite caused too many fights over whose turn it was to swing. But with the opening of the area’s first peaceful playground, there will be less bickering and more playing. Kids, parents and school offi cials mingled behind the iron gates of the Union Street school Saturday for an open house and ribbon-cutting for the new playground, an area designed with multipurpose surface games and no traditional playground equipment like swings, slides or monkey bars. “The reason it’s peaceful is because there are enough activities for all the children, so they’re not fighting over one activity,” said Marie Keenan, principal of the school for nursery through sixth-grade students. “They used to all be on the playground equipment, and there’s just not enough for everyone.” Up to 50 children used the old playground at one time, Keenan said, so when employees from Schenectady County’s Strategic Alliance for Health visited the school in September to see if the principal would be interested in a $3,000 grant for a peaceful playground, she said yes right away. The playground allows students to learn conflict resolution, improve their motor skills and coordination, practice the alphabet and learn shapes, colors and numbers, she said. “It’s great to be so dispersed,” Keenan said. “It allows the kids to be distributed throughout the playing area, and they’re engaging in healthy, educational, purposeful play.” To prepare for its unveiling, St. John the Evangelist parents and gym teachers began teaching students the rules for the variety of games featured on the playground, which include multi-use circles, quadrants, lines and courts. As usual the Gazetto buries the lead. The real story was the hugely successful open house at St John's. More and more parents have had enough of the overcrowded City schools. Open House signs are all over. It's not too late to sign up children/grandchildren for St John's, St Helen's or NDBG High School for next year.
True, these schools are better. And DV keeps saying parents have the choice. Yeah, let's see DV. who claims to be "well heeled" from his "investments," let's see if he pays the tuition for the kids to go there.
Watch him say "oh I donate to my alma mater." That doesn't do diddly squat for the parents in the city who are FORCED to send their kids to the sucky public schools because they can't afford to pay the the taxes for the millionaires downtown and pay tuition also.
If the parents send their kids to the Catholic or private schools, they risk losing their homes to tax seizure when they don't pay the taxes.
Yeah, a lot DV knows about finances. When you are the typial household in the city with an income of $30,000 a year. well, DV, tell us HOW you pay $6,000 a year PER CHILD to attend Catholic school or $10,000 or $15,000 for a non-religious private school. Well?????
