Career development center will help at-risk youths

Schenectady County at-risk youth now have a modern facility to train and prepare them to enter the workforce.

The Northeast Parent & Child Society celebrated their grand opening of its new career development center on Tuesday, May 25 with a ribbon cutting a tour of the facility. The center is hoping to increase the number of individuals served from 100 to 200 with the center, which is located on Franklin Street in downtown Schenectady. Since 2006, NPCS has offered a variety of services outside of career development too.

The center serves county residents from 18 to 24 years old meeting low-to-moderate income criteria and is in need of help securing employment. Having a high school diploma isn’t required and high school and college graduates are welcomed.

“This particular initiative … is really a major milestone in strengthening this community,” said John Henley, president of NPCS. “This really is a new venture.”

In today’s economy it can be hard to find hope, said Henley, with traditional jobs and careers disappearing as technical jobs continue to grow. Being able to give someone the willpower to survive in the future is what Henley said is most important.

Henley shared a reflection he had during his first night in the city.

“My first evening here when the sun went down it was interesting experience to drive down Erie Boulevard and drive by GE and see the lights come on … and the great lights come over like a monolithic structure all over Schenectady and you drive around and realize a scant 40 years ago there was probably 40,000 jobs in this town,” said Henley.

Judith Dagostino, chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature said the center is a result of a partnership between the county and the organization. The project was awarded a federal grant for $750,000 towards the center.

Dagostino said jobs are coming to the county in high demand fields, but many of them require skilled training or education. The center will help fill the gap from some of today’s youth desiring to learn the necessary skills.

“This center will provide the skills so very, very necessary so our youth can benefit from these jobs,” said Dagostino.

Ray Gillen, chair of Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority, said the federal grant was what helped make the career center a reality. The “state of the art” training facility will prove valuable to the community, said Gillen.

          I wouldn't think that in this economic climate "Grants" are easy to come by.  So this probably means that the City/County is in such dire straights that they beat out other competitors for the grant money.  And this would reinforce all the tax burden statistics the City/County has achieved.  And ultimately, all the bloggers on this topic have been right all along or else this grant money would never have come this way!  Death Ray and the Savage regime continue to live in infamy . . . .

The career center will train the 18 to 24 age group to find jobs in other states because none of them will be able to find jobs that aren't here and pay one of the highest tax rates in the country.

So, what Madam Chairperson Dagostino is saying is that "we're creating the jobs, but the people living here don't have the right skills for them..." or read into it a little deeper and see what she's REALLY saying about the people who elected her.

The problem with the Nattering Nayboobs of Negativity they either  don't think at all  or attempt to think too much.

Mrs. Dagostino said exactly what she said -- this will be a great place to train our young people with the skills that they need to get jobs  --- nothing more should be read into it.    The NNN's should get over it .. and get a life.

And if the parents are working, how are the children, who may not be of age of getting a license as of yet, supposed to get to the training center, especially if they lives in the outskirts of the county?  Or is this just more county money going to support those who live in the city (and yes, I know, this would be so much better if we eliminated all the towns, and went to a city-county, but we're not there).  That still wouldn't make it any easier for people to get there.

Well, the only jobs Gillen and the plex created require a hairnet and/or dish gloves.

So, if this center will be training the youth for clean energy jobs, at least they can move to Malta for internships and entry level jobs in that field.

Hopefully these kids can also get their GED at this center.

          Training is just a very small part of the puzzle.  More importantly, the "will" to work and become a productive citizen has to be there.  Some people have graduated from prestigious institutions such as Siena and have failed to engage in the job market, kicking back and offering "advice" to the tax budened burgeois.  So as one can see, the training has to mesh with the "will" to be a useful productive member of society for such a program to be successful.

     The funniest {as usual} is pathetic Death Ray. This is needed, "for all the new jobs that we keep creating." That's why the County leads the area in unemployment-AGAIN! Is he trying to convince himself because since he assumed "leadership" 10,000 high paying jobs have disappeared in this County. Of course, he keeps his and gets idiot awards from the Chamber. This is all about jobs for the trainers never the youths. Like Lumpy Kosiur multiplied by 10. Instead of a do nothing training center they should put electric fencing around the NE school.
