Welfare benefits paid in Schenectady County should be the same as the rest of the state so as not to attract people to settle here strictly for the increased benefits.
Um, they are the same.
The attraction is that you get alot more for your rent money (you can get 4 bedrooms here for what you would pay for 1 in NYC), better schools (stop laughing, but sadly, it's true), detached housing, and believe it or not, safer streets.
Trust me, Spanish Harlem, the south Bronx, or Bed-Stuy, make Hamilton Hill, look like Beverly Hills.
An if a bro can make a few extra on the down low, slinging rock, den dat's coo too. You know what I'm sayin'?
Also, any drug product that costs $10 in NYC, goes for $25 in Schenectady, and that is a direct result of the current prohibition, that not unlike the old one, is aided, and abetted by the people who stand to profit the most from it, the authorities.
I have NEVER said there was no crime in the city. I did say that according to FBI statistics certain types of crime are down compared to 10 years ago.
And .. the Renaissance continues.
EXCUSE ME, but YOU NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER said that "certain times" of crimes are down "compared to 10 years ago."
You NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER said that.
These are YOUR WORDS VERBATIM from your post on October 16, 2010:
The crime rate is down in Schenectady -- including murders -- according to the FBI crime statistics. Downtown Schenectady has turned the corner .. and is coming back to life.
And since I virtually ALWAYS ALWAYS have PROOF of what I say, I also provide the link to the page iwith the message that you wrote where you stated those words (that you are now trying to claim you did not say) It is message # 320. Here is the link to the page with YOUR POST, with YOUR WORDS DV.
And by the way, your posted continued by saying that people, "all over the greater Capital District" are happy with the progress, they like to "eat" (OK, there are the gin mills), to see a show (a famiy of four can hardly afford a show, and when you add dinner and gas to drive here, wow,),and then you said "shop." Can yoiu tell us DV, WHERE do people shop downtown, other than Rudnicks? At the overpriced bookstore where you can by each and every book a few miles away at much lower cost and park for free). So, DV, where to people by electronics, music stuff, dresses, sportswhere, children's clothes, shoes, coats, kitchen needs, draperies, china, silverware, hardware, furniture, pet supplies, sewing machines, craft needs, lighting (yes, there is the lighting place on Erie but hardly something the average Schenectady homeowner can afford), etc. etc.
And tell us DV, how many of these people you ALLEGEDLY talked to are choosing to buy a house in the city????? Can you answer that? Can you provide even one, just one teeny weeny shred of proof that people are flocking to the city to live here????? Well DV??????

Every county in the state has it's own benefits that they pay some are standard state wide and in Schenectady County there are 12 programs available to welfare dependents that not all counties offer. There should be a standardized program throughout the state. Why would NYC send people to Schenectady County to apply for benefits if they weren't going to get more in payments and programs?

Actually, the standard housing allowance , is much higher in NYC, but my point was that your dollar goes farther up here, and the conditions are much better, especially if you're a drug dealer.
The food stamp allowance is the same, as is medicaid, and the amount of monthly cash assistance.
What ever the reason the county has too many people on welfare.
And all the theft from the taxpayers - the 24th highest taxed county in the whole country --- are forced to fund that downtown stuff which is not even releaving the welfare rolls. What the heck good does a few minimum wage ticket takers, dishwashers and maids, counterhelp, and bank tellers do for the county.
And the FACT that those high paid state employees are NOT moving here, poves there is no renaissance.

Agreed, and agreed.
There are jobs moving into the "area", just not to Schenectady.
The only ones that are attracted here now, are peasants, and less.
Hey, if you're a leper, where do you move? To a leper colony of course. Schenectady is just a nicer leper colony, but with a different socio/economic outlook. The same socio/economic outlook as say...The Black Hole Of Calcutta.
The people referred here weren't sent out of concern for their welfare, I believe. At the same time Schenectady and numerous other upstate cities were filling up with criminals, New York City politicians (Rudy, mainly) were being lauded in the media for reducing crime, getting people off the welfare rolls, and improving the schools. I know for a fact that judges were sometimes mandating that people with no previous ties to Schenectady serve their probation here. I am not against providing services to the needy. I just feel that a community should take care of its own residents first and one community should dealwith the problems of large numbers of its citizens without merely pushing it along to other communities. It only worked temporarily by the way. NYC crime is going up again and upstate cities are pretty full. Our governor needs to acknowledge that this is what New York has become, the home of a nomadic permanent underclass. I'm not sure what can be done, but sweeping the problem under the rug by criticizing places like Schenectady as if we spawned the problem does nothing to help. Sorry to be such a downer.

To a point, you are correct with this, however, we need to have some constructive criticism, and look at what the problems are, address them and start to take care of them, so these issues don't continue. Just whining that there's issues will do nothing. There needs to be answers brought to the table also, but the problem is that no one has brought those answers forward for a long time, and then there's some that are elected (all parties) that will hear people complaining, but will not listen to the suggestions on how to take care of them, and then the same people complaining, not getting answers to their questions, reelect the people who are not giving them answers.

This is a$$ backwards.....................schenectady IS being criticized FOR sweeping it's problems under the rug and by not addressing the obvioius problems!!
Using the excuse that these problems are 'everywhere' is really NO excuse for the reckless, irresponsible mismanagement from the plex and schenectady's elected officials.
The plex, supported by schenectady's elected officials have, in fact, spawned it's own problems!!! And the truth of the matter is, that they clearly do not know how to remedy it!!!
VOTE THEM ALL OUT!!

That 44 gang members were finally rounded up by Federal authorities is some kind of great accomplishment for the horrible DEM machine? This should have been addressed by the SPD years ago. Where was the anti-gang initiative by the pathetic Stratton administration? Right there wasn't any. No one could mention the word gangs.
Ignore the problem it will surely expand. Anyone who demanded action was too negative and should pick up a pom pom. The gang taggers, the pit bulls owners, the drug traffic shooters have finally been rounded up. By the Feds. Vale became an annex of Hamilton Hill many moons ago. But no one knows from nuthin and we need a new sidewalk/curb program? The DEM implosion continues.
The dems sat back for years with the promise of cleaning up hamilton hill. Not only did they not clean up the hill, they actually created yet another.....aka...mt pleasant!!! They knew the area was being taken over by gangs and blight. Hell, they even moved Marcella's outta there!!
They sat back doling out millions to the 'friends and family club' while the taxes reached name recognition as the highest in the state. And while the gangs had free rein, shooters still at large, daily robberies and working folks fleeing the city at a record rate!!
So it took almost a DECADE to arrest only THIRTY??? Plus it took the FBI????
Schenectady's libs are well deserving of 'criticism' for turning a blind eye, a deaf ear and sweeping all of it's dirty issues under the rug!!!
But hell.............at least they got proctors and the lion king, huh?

Let me clarify. We SHOULD criticize our elected officials for ignoring these kinds of problems. I'm just tired of seeing the negative, disparaging stories in the media about Schenectady without telling the truth about how this situation came about. Mayor Al did make some efforts in trying to keep this city from continuing to be the dumping place of preference for various governmental and non-governmental agencies, but we have been under siege for quite some time with no help. Why does our new governor have a high approval rating while we are living this way? Why do our senators get re-elected while we suffer like this? We get a kind of "what can you expect in a dump like Schenectady" attitude but I don't think I do anything different from people who live in nicer places and I think I am just as deserving of clean safe streets that you can drive on as they are. We pay our taxes and obey our laws.

What do you want the governor to do..........throw money at the problem and think it will disappear?? That has been tried and done and yet continues today which is why nys is the highest taxed in the country and schenectady county is the highest in the state!! Historically it doesn't work!!
Schenectady pays their police force...how much??? And how is the crime issue both outside and in the police force? How much do schenectadians pay in taxes? And how are their roads and infrastructure? How many businesses are tax exempt? And how is that working out for the residents? THEY ARE FLEEING! How many folks who don't live in schenectady county are collecting county welfare benefits? Does schenectady county's welfare handouts go far and above the mandate? How many Hamilton Hills reside in Schenectady? TWO!
The DEMOCONS have brushed this crap under the rug long enough!!!
VOTE THEM ALL OUT!!! AND ABOLISH THE FAILED PLEX!
