Let's reach back 50 years for an example that proves absolutely nothing? 50 years ago Downtown was booming. There were major department stores, furniture stores, hardware stores, restaurants. The sidewalks were packed with shoppers not drug and alcohol clients. There were private entrepreneurs. Business people weren't waiting for a handout.

You left out the most important element...........GE WAS HERE!!!!

The metroplex will NEVER resurrect that life style in schenectady again........no matter how much tax payers money they take!!! It is what it is. They opened the floodgates to every form of scum that could make it up the thruway! And this is what the city is left with!

The metroplex has failed miserably and needs to be abolished!  The elected democons are fleeing the city. They have drawn themselves into a corner that they can not get out of. It will take decades to undo this mess!!!  Olender's was a fine business. I wish them well.

The DEMS are fleeing because they know it's not sustainable. They vote for a new nursing home and flee to Half Moon. They have feasted on the friends and family club aka {Metrograft} while the average County resident is squeezed. Proctor's is run by an ego maniac who fled the City for a huge suburban mansion. The rot has spread far beyond the City limits. Ask any Hamburg St merchant. Unemployment is the highest in the region, taxes are the 12th highest in the Nation and the Gazetto wants more taxes to fix the City's moonscape? They should be screaming for an independent audit of City and County finances.

Meanwhile all that the current crop of DEM morons can come up with is more bread and circuses. Another park, a pocket park on Erie, a catering hall where Key Bank used to be, expanding Gillen's Gulch footprint. The former Trustco HQ is a shrine to their total incompetence. According to Death Ray that was another "opportunity".

My personal experience is  different - 50 years ago if you were smart you left town.   Where would you rather work in your dads barbershop  on Clinton Street or  in Hollywood ?

I dont know if my dad and uncles were democrat or republican but they left schenectady because they were ambitious  20 y olds and had a good imagination . Schenectady was  already done  -

You sound like the kind of bigoted person who wears  a white robe and a hood at night ... and burns crosses on peoples' lawns.    Take your vile bigoted attitude someplace else .. we don't need low-lifes like you in Schenectady County.

DoV firstly i appreciate the balance that you provide to the forum.

You certainly have hit upon a fundementl problem- ( exacerbated by Schenectady ozone ) knowing a REAL bigot or even a REAL  racist from a Teapartyer ( is that a word ) - its an insult to racist and bigots who have put so much time and effort into HATE. These are titles that must be earned.

The politico panic inflictors posting here only make solving problems harder-
Olenders could certainly use some help with their website- maybe MT could help

Many many folks DID leave schenectady!!! In talking to folks that went to school in schenectady county, they say that most of their school mates have left the state and haven't seen them since graduation.

And I am in agreement..........in hind sight, leaving the state years ago would have been the better choice. But it clearly has to be done BEFORE you have kids and they build friendships and roots here. Before there are medical problems and one feels secure with their present doctor. Before you are needed to help with extended family members. And before you build close friendships with folks in you community. And before you can begin to think that 'you' can make a difference for change. JUST WALK AWAY!!

Ya gotta leave right after graduation from school/college. IMHO

Hey, I hear the the Robinson site is filled with the bodies of dead developers who came to Schenectady -- check it out you fearless bloodhounds..

btw: your arguments, once again [and perhaps always ] fly in the face of economic reality -- so trying to blame Olender's closure on this or that political faction is illogical and contrary to the data -- but, hey, we realized long, long ago that you never let facts get in the way of your mania...

I love a good joke, that is why I come here.

Right....Plex businesses which pay nothing in property and school taxes and save $30K - $80K every year do have an economic advantage over businesses like Olender which pays close to $50K a year.

Let's just say, for example, that the businesses Downtown paid their assessed property and school taxes. Proctors, Villia Italia, Marcellas, Bombers, Aperitivo. The schools wouldn't be begging for money. The roads would be paved. The homeowners wouldn't bear the entire tax burden.

It's simple, you do business in Schenectady, you pay just like everyone else.

You mean not pay like every connected DEM millionaire? The City taxes are so absurd that no one wants to pay full pop. If everyone paid their fair share the streets would be paved with gold. Could even lower the rate 20%. Of course, let's not blame the DEM morons that controlled the purse in City Council for 35 straight years. But then again they had a taxpayer JEEP to speed around the City moonscape.

What developers Death Ray? Please list all those interested in your "larger footprint"-lol. Full of crap and the Gazetto dutifully reports it as "news". Put in another nonprofit, governmental gin mill, or pocket park and be done with it. Can't wait to see who bid on the Armory.

At least non-profits are helping people.  Businesses who have relocated downtown to get the tax break amaze me.  Don'[t understand why they can't come up Crane street and help the businesses in that neighborhood---I repeat NEIGHBORHOOD.

They are consistent. The Metrograft DEMS refuse to help anyone outside of 2 blocks on State. You cross Erie and its like crossing the DMZ into North Korea. Neutron bomb site. All the buildings are up {except for Gillen's Gulch where Robinson's was} but no people.

What is pathetic is how they think improving an unused park will lead to "economic stimulus". They never ran a business, they no planning credentials but in this stunad County they are economic/business experts. No wonder this County has the highest unemployment and that SCCC went to the Albany Chamber for help.

The non-profit Proctors (also classified as a charity) is helping whom? The kids? A one week-45 minute summer program cost $350 per student. I'm sure the many Schenectady residents will be signing up for that.

The non-profit MVP is helping .....themselves?

The term non-profit has been bastardized to the extreme in Schenectady.

There are nonprofits and nonprofits. Salvation Army and City Mission do wonderful work. Then there are dozens of others that enrich the executive director/bored. Very few with any vow of poverty. Residents would be shocked at the number of nonprofit houses off the tax roll in the best neighborhoods. One of the biggest homes in the GE Plot is coming off the tax rolls. Then you have Mercury Morris on State and Union College on Seward working overtime. Too few paying way too much with too many exemptions. Olender had to pay over $50,000 because Death Ray and friends all pay zero.
