Didn't I tell you that pathological liar would spin this? It reminds me of how he swindled the legislature and Little League officials with the swampy wetlands and promised he could build them a ballpark on Guilderland Ave. The Little League officials sat there like bumpkins and rubes and believed his silver tongue lies like "duhhh" with there slack jaws drooping while he danced around the fact that prior ACOE and NYSDEC wetland deliniations had shown the parcel to be a swamp. Now he pretends that there is some big tenant who has been coveting the Olender spot.

I can't believe we pay a guy to lie to our elected officials, to their face, then give him a compensation package worth a quarter million dollars. The man has not as much run a Schwanns route.

Considering the fact that Olender's closed their Clifton Park store  2 years ago ... and their Albany store a few weeks ago .. one can draw  at least 2 conclusions
#1 - apparently the company's going out of business had more to do with forces BEYOND the borders of a single county  ...  hmm..let's be reasonable  and think a moment ... national recession ... the influx of larger competitors ... the actual management of the particular small business  ---- ALL of those are factors that Metroplex and Schenectady County officials have absolutely no control over

#2 - the critics who have posted above are a bunch of hypocrites --- only blaming Schenectady County when the owner closed a store in Saratoga County  2 years ago and a store in Albany a few weeks ago  -- so how come the lunatic critics don't go after the GOPers who control Clifton Park and Saratoga County ???????????   They won't because the merry band of lunatics is full of horse crap.

While it is sad to see a business close after a century, I happen to agree with Mr. Gillen that it may turn into an opportunity for something new and better to occupy that site --something that will anchor the continued renaissance of Schenectady County.

Yes, Mr Gillen may turn this into an opportunity to hike taxes on the homeowners even more, get another gin mill and make homeowners pay.

Hey, DV, WHEN, WHEN do you suggest the roads in the city should be fixed????????     Can you answer that????????

As usual DVR has egg on his face. The manager of the Colonie store was Olender's father who is 90 years old. The Downtown store was 10X the size, had the warehouse and was a Downtown fixture. He held on as long as he could with DSIC taxes, exploding crime, no parking and City taxes which would make anyone else gargle Drano. The fact that Olenders after 109 years and the Proctor's Jewelery after 3 years both fled the miracle Downtown says it all. The Downtown business climate sucks and Death Ray/DSIC/Chamber are total frauds.

Like KEM cleaners closing on Erie was an "opportunity". Like the Silver Diner closing on Erie was an "opportunity". Like the gun store relocating to Troy was an "opportunity". Like Robinson's being demolished for Gillen's Gulch was an opportunity. BTW, Death Ray didn't even have the common decency to tell follow DEMS on the City Council that his great "plans" for Robinson went belly up. They had to read it in the papers.

The DEM morons are like the PLO. They never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Coming soon! Renaissance Bus Station park! Pocket parks where businesses used to be! And a new bike path! The Gazetto and the few remaining dupes cannot contain their excitement. Your County Tax Dollars at sleep!

B/C for every business that closes there, 10 open. for every business that opens here, 3 close.

Right.....an opportunity like the empty Robinson building.

An opportunity like the former (still empty) gun shop on Erie Blvd.

The empty former Kem cleaners on Erie Blvd.

The empty former Grossman's on Erie Blvd.

The empty former Frank Gallo on Erie Blvd.

The empty Trustco business offices on Erie Blvd.

Guess it's all the businesses fault for leaving Schenectady or closing right? Wrong. It's because the leaders of Schenectady and the Metroplex have no urban planning sense and even less urban revitilization skills. They've decimated the City's ability to simply function on a daily basis. When you can't pay to pave roads, you've reached a new low.

my grandfather had a barbershop (  on Clinton street next to Baums newsroom . Guess what- it closed fifty freakin years ago.  Why are ' you people ' running around sounding like a bunch of morons ? most of you must be in a coma. If you were born in Schenectady and still live here- go get your head examined. ( sorry mom this doesn't include you ).  If you came here from somewhere else- why are you still here ?

Fifty years ago you could sell a house in the City, now you either have to burn them down or abandon them.

Some people chose to stay and some are forced. Overall, most City residents know that their tax dollars aren't being spent  to improve the neighborhoods and the crime rate keeps escalating.

Nice to know Somebody could care less about his Mommy's well-being.

PS - all the businesses I mentioned above only closed within the last few years, not fifty.

My personal experience is - if you bought a house fifty years ago- its not worth jack now.  My father was born in a house on schenectady st y grandfather bought in 1901 fro $5,500 - ( i think it got up to 40 grand at one time )WE GAVE THE HOUSE AWAY-

Dont worry mom has it made- you cant hear any gunshots from her house-

50 years ago businesses came to schenectady because it was booming! They weren't lured here with enticing tax exemptions. It had residents who actually WORKED!! There were never lines at the dss building with a hot dog vender outside. Everyone paid their fair share in taxes including the businesses. There were no slums 50 years ago either.

The bottom line is.........Schenectady is a very poor city with very poor residents. Most are not self sustaining. And those that are..........are footing the bill that they can't afford anymore!!! The city can't afford to maintain the roads anymore.......that is a classic!!!! Crime is rampant. Shooters are still on the loose. The school district can't graduate 50% of their students. And you can buy drugs on just about any street corner!!

The metroplex has failed miserably and needs to be abolished!  The elected democons are fleeing the city. They have drawn themselves into a corner that they can not get out of. It will take decades to undo this mess!!!

Olender's was a fine business. I wish them well.

Let's reach back 50 years for an example that proves absolutely nothing? 50 years ago Downtown was booming. There were major department stores, furniture stores, hardware stores, restaurants. The sidewalks were packed with shoppers not drug and alcohol clients. There were private entrepreneurs. Business people weren't waiting for a handout.

You left out the most important element...........GE WAS HERE!!!!

The metroplex will NEVER resurrect that life style in schenectady again........no matter how much tax payers money they take!!! It is what it is. They opened the floodgates to every form of scum that could make it up the thruway! And this is what the city is left with!
